OK Tassie Speed Seekers, while we're still trying to work out how to get to Robbin's Passage, how about a run down this 2km long rock sea-wall. Photos taken today:
World Heritage Area on the side where the 'wall' is, so no roads and no access other than by boat (or sailboard). You can very easily get to the beach on the other side where I took the last photo from though.
I think it'd be best to sail in a NE wind and go on the inside (SW side) of the rock wall. The curve isn't so good for this side, but would get better wind and would 'feel' safer!! NE'ers are very common and strong.
Used to fly over that all the time in a chopper on the way to work (at the time 80Km south of there), but figured it'd be too sheltered for W-SW winds. Hadn't considered NE wind - do they get any decent NE winds in Strahan?
Lookes good what could possibly go wrong
You wouldnt want to take Kaleb there with all his breakages, outgoing tide sucked out through Hells Gates into a 5-6 m swell hard to walk back to the car.
Need a rescue craft
Theres a hell of a current running through that channel sometimes, might be doing 25knts on the board and 40 on the fin, or go with it and be fanging but feel like your cruising
Yep, the current can rip through. The wind can too. The wind in the footage below would have been to broad (NW), but shows how windy it can get. This is where you'd leave from. Henty would have been good, pity we didn't know about it when I took this video!!
Just a word of warning for anyone driving on ocean beach, always keep your eye on the water even on a calm day, some friends parked their vehicle well away from the water right up near the sand bank, it was low tide and the exposed sand was dry all the way to the water which was well over 200ft away, but a surge came out of no where and went right up to the the top of the beach, friends couldnt believe it, also there are a few quicksandy? (is that a word lol) spots that dont mix well with diesels idling away on the turbo timer
