What a great day today
15 to 20knts cross / off
If you haven't got a black box you should.
A average day turns into a lot of fun
Very happy I have one in the shed

...looks good!

Q. So, when would you reach for the blackbox, rather than say a 92 litre starboard Quad or kode for example?

Cheers

I use it in 10 to 25 knts before I get my
92 L quad
When the wind condition are lite and gusty and waves are sloppy
When you catch the wave on the bbox it picks up speed so you can move it around on the wave.great fun board

So, you go out on an 87ltr then when it gets windier you change to a 92ltr quad? Maybe I'm missing something?! Loving the beach wheels - would like one for the walk to Makaha!

Ben, could be wrong but my interpretation is.... Black box when the wave are not so flash, and a larger traditional shape when the wind is still light but conditions improve? I guess the board is designed to get more out of average condition rather than a floaty option.

Just like surfboards of similar shape.

Traditional short board shape for better surf

Shorter wider short board performs better in average surf

sounds like you are using that board in lots of conditions it was and wasnt designed for

cross off 15 - 20 knots is pretty damn windy and drivey on a normal 80- 85 litre board...

is it really going that well in those conditions ?

- i think its important for potential riders to know the conditions it IS going to work in. I would imagine The last thing Starboard would want is tons of riders buying the board for the wrong reasons and being disappointed.

i may be wrong - maybe it does go off in powered conditions.. i would be very surprised though.

I strongly suspect shes going to be a major handful in powered DTL...unless you weigh 100 kegs.

however i can totally see it going off in light to moderate wind cross on conditions - which was the design envelope for this board.

I would be VERY happy to be proven wrong!

Yes, I agree reflex.

I know I bringing it back to surfing a bit but....
I had been using a fishcuit (sort fat thing) and although easy, when the surf got good it was completely substandard to a performance board that would really turn and drive!

Well let's just say I have riden the board in all conditions,I like it in cross to cross/ off that's just me.and yes the board is not design for that.its a fun board to ride.don't want be a pro sailor like some people, just enjoy sailing it.plus I only took one board home with me this time...everyone is different
The pic are just showing how I'm loving the board

thats my opinion

This isn't windy enough for me on a 80lt board and 2 foot slop!

Yep saw the board in the conditions described except down the SE and it went off compared to the other wave boards on the water. The other boards struggled to crack a top turn or generate any speed on the wave. The BB made the crap conditions look like fun.

I doubt if anyone who buys one of these will be disappointed, it rips in sub 25kt conditions. Sure change boards when it gets between the 20 -25 kt range and jump on ya 80 lt. But when the wind isn't cranking and the wave lack a bit of punch, from what I have seen on the beach this board is what I would be using.

Spectator / camera mans point of view only. (windsurfer for 20 years before turning to the dark side)

The Black Box looks like a really fun board for those days that are not ideal for full on powered up DTL wave sailing. There are much better boards in the range for that.

But in saying that, Ty had that thing spinning in a dime off the top sending buckets everywhere. Bottom turns on a lumpy face were another story. Bounced around a bit due to the hull shape I guess. (Not a lot of rocker). On a glassy face it behaved quite well.

It really looks comfortable on the mushy waves. (Which is usually a higher percentage of the time).

There is no doubt that he would have had his dedicated wave board if he had it with him when the wind picked up / cross off.

I guess its horses for course. In most condition we usually get it looks like a nice horse to be on.

Fit for purpose for those not so good days.

The smile on his face after that session said it all.

My 2 cents worth.

awesome news then ! sounds like a great 1 board solution for basically anyone in oz. most places would be lucky to get 20 knots . here in wa i reckon i sailed 4 days last season that were gusting over 25-we seem to be getting less wind here in perth these days. so you should be pretty safe on the top end.

might be the ultimate scarbs slayer !

Want be a board for everyone's taste .at 90kg I have been riding it up to 25knts.you still need that full on wave board for jumping and down the line sailing
It could take over as been my big board

Just a pity it looks like a formula board.
