Anyone got one of those older starboard fish boards they made in 2002ish I think? Looking at getting a 90lt one as a light wind board are they much fun to ride? How do they compare to modern boards? We don't have a lot of bigger wave boards floating around here and it's going cheap is it worth considering or should I just keep saving for a 90lt quad?

I got the 76L and 86L Starboard Fish. They are 2002. The next size up is the 96L.
I'm currently trying to give away the 76L and will be giving the 86L away once I pick up the 82L Quad.
The Stsrboard Fish boards are sick boards in onshore small waves but no so much in bigger cross off waves.

If the waves are mushy and its not too windy they are great.

They aren't that quick to turn but have got some vee in the tail and thrusters so they do grip a bit but the tail is wide and they dont get on too well in slightly steeper waves.

Should be cheap too as they are an old design.....

I had a 96L Fish until 4 weeks ago - when I broke his neck with a flat landing. I had enjoyed many great sessions (lately with a 6.2 Blade) and I am still keen to replace it ... despite wave guru Jens saying that designs have improved since 2002.
So its good to hear that a few others also tend to "believe" that it was ahead of its time. In any case, I can't see I could get any better fun / $ ratio, but I am happy to be convinced of the opposite. Does anyone still have one in the shed ??????

I Tested the 96 fish out on the weekend a difficult board to get used to cause im used to freeride sometime it felt like more comfortable not in straps the mast track seems long but to me the board turns on a dime Cant wait to get it up to gerro.

Feels good when its in the air but one thing i did notice was the patch of board just in front of the back straps seems to be flexiable or not that strong. mabe the foam undeneath has has compression damage from the pervious rider.

Where do you guys normally set the mast track

What would be the equivalent of that board in today's terms As in if i get to like the feel of it and break it what would be the best thing to replace it with?

I think you will need to go custom unless their black box turns out to be something similar?
Let's hope so..
Mark stone's quad fish might be worth considering if you kill the beloved starboard.
If I recall correctly, the 96 litre Starboard fish i measured once had the following dimensions: 245 x 59.5 with a 44.5cm tail. In today's terms, that's a really long board with a super wide tail and quite narrow overall width (when you take into consideration the length at 245cm).
I've been searching for ages for a modern variant similar to starboard's fish and ended up getting Keith from Quatro to build me something fishy recently. As a comparison, it is 225cm x 63.5cm with a 42cms square squash tail and has 94 litres of foam in it and can be used as a quad or thruster. To test the range I purposely tried it out from super light wind logo high Hookipa to 4.6 maxed out sprecs, and although not ideal, shows how much range the larger multi fin wave boards have now.

I've had three fish boards over time. two 85/86L (one with the square swallow tail, one with the rounded swallow tail) and currently the 97L sitting in the shed waiting for my wife to get good enough to have a crack at Scarbs. These things are the best boards for some one getting into onshore wave riding. Beware though you have to give them every thing you have in the bottom turn unless they just DO NOT TURN. All your efforts will be rewarded though as they accellerate in the like a rocket if you get it all right. It took up until just recently that I have found a board better (for myself anyway) than the fish in onshore conditions. 85L Euphoria by Delta for a cheaper board or a 90L RRD twin which is wicked in everything.

All my boards have died by breaking between the footstraps, so if they are soft in that area take it for one last crack and be happy that you have ridden the best board starboard have ever made.

Layton.
