I see Ben Newson and Craig Spottiswood had equal times, they were talking about using a tandem board so I guess they did, is that a LOC first

Congrats to Peter and everyone who had a go

to be anywhere near the front Pack you needed 9m+and BIGwide boards and massive fins, otherwise for most people you were on/off/off/off/on/off the plane.

Even the guys that had 9M sales had them set very bagged out.

If you were on a normal reach it wasnt so bad, but due the the extreme dowind nature of the race you actually need MORE power to make some of the angles.

I think normally 95% of people wouldn't have gone out for a sail, unless they were mucking around and perhaps teaching beginers etc, but race day is race day andyou have tomake the most of what was on offer, the organisers called the start pretty close to scheduled time, which was a goodmove.

Yeah the guys in front were all on 9.4+.
8.6m was the biggest sail I had. So thats what I used. I did a lot of pumping. There is a point where there is simply no substitute for horsepower. Patrik overtook me on the last leg while I was out of the straps pumping to try stay on the plane in a lull. He cruised past on his 9.6m. I grovelled into the beach. I was in second for a while But only after Jesper got nailed by the chopper. hahaha.

BD on 9.3m but he couldnt get planing out of the gybes.

9.5m would have been wicked

Myself 5th, and Rowen 6th were both on 8.6m reflex 3's which were awesome low end power and efficiency, but the sail area for the wind was still lacking but planing all the way through to finish. The finish through the reef where the angle was deep and the wind seemed to have completely died was where it was a pumpfest and a last bit of fun

I was on the starboard 127 with a 46cm fin.

Chris L, Jesper and Patrick were sitting between 100-300m infront for most of the race. It was amazing how much they broke up the wind and it was probably 3 or 4 knots less in their "dirty air".

Rowen and i had a tight tussle i managed to catch up to him about 2/3 way through the race, and slowly made a small amount of ground on him but it was hard work and pushing every last bit of fin and power out of the gear to get that extra knot or 2.

Also in the tighter race and in light winds where speeds were alot closer together than in high winds, it was quite noticeable how much ground you could gain around the boats in the turns. The first 2 or 3 boats i went out wide to play it safe and not fall in from the boats wind shadow, but soon realized that i could go alot tighter and make more ground and time. I could almost say that you could gain 10 seconds in a turn, and that 10 seconds at full speed is at least 100 metres or so.

In the photo. Tight high speed finish haha

Positions 2 to 6. Jesper, Chris (about to be overtaken by 1 metre bigger sail), Patrik, Isaac and Rowen

aaah yeah thats me pumping like crap to stay on the plane in a lull, with a big bowl of cabbage on my 48.5cm pointer not helping. With Patrik in the next gust upwind ready to power past. Looks windy in the pic! It wasnt.

I had a 7.5 Severne Overdrive on a 75 % Carbon mast -

and an isonic 122 with a 40 cm fin - which was extremely comfortable

That combo got me down the course nicely -and with some Pre race training for technique (i usually wave sail - the last time i properly used race gear was 3 years ago) i would have been easily 5 or 7 places further up the front - i finished 20th.

My gybes suck so bad! I came off the plane on every single one - which is unforgiveably bad technique!

Just posted this because i wanted to say that even though you needed a big sail for the outright win - a 7.5 Rigged for low end power (tighten up that leech a bit - get that sail touching the boom) was totally doable - i planed for all of the race and was generally very comfortable.

Loved the energy in the air jsut before the race started - with Helis buzzing around and countdowns in progress - definitely gets the heart beating.

Yet again the race vibe was awesome and one of the highlights of the season for me.

are you sure? i thought his back-up was an 8.6 after the mast on his 9.5 snapped 5 minutes before the race was supposed to start . if you are right that means he had 2 x 9.3's ready to race. perhaps one with slightly different tuning than the other.

well done to Volwater (on his new avanti sails, which cant be too bad) and of course jesper, lockwood, rowen and isaac and all the others representing WA!

next year i am going to try a pointer, i think the extra drive and board speed could have come in handy. especially on the last leg where i lost about 5 places to come in 29th. i would have been happy with top 25 but unfortunatley it's not a race to the last outside mark.

has a nice little wave sail on the way in to the finish line on my 9.5 and 134L (rigged with a bit too much downhaul in retrospect).

thanks to all the juniors for not beating me, especially the tassie lads) and all the women too (except for Karin)- she's got skills!

it depends on your weight... 7.5m should be heaps for a cruisy race, not expecting to be powered up and planing the whole time, if you weigh 73kg.

if you weigh 1200kg as does BD, a 9.3m doesnt cut it.

First of all Stoked to get 2nd :)..

This year was pretty light wind. Anything under a powerful 7.5, would have been struggling,, So well done to all that completed the race.

I know a lot of sailors did not make it and had to pull out. Great effort to give it a go,,, In the end there was just below 200 sailors starting and this was awesome for the forecast.

In the end the organisation did extremely well, to get result in both Waves and the Marathon based on a doubtful forecast. It can't be cheap to have the helicopter hanging there + all the other media packages. So hopefully the outcome will be a nice 30 minuts of some good action.. and the support from sponsors etc be intact, for the years to come.

I used the KArace 9.4 myself with the F2 82, 44 Volt.
Great start and top 5 out of the beach, I would say. Dan got the best start again,,
He actually went to the wrong boat (more upwind fishing boat,,) but realized in time and corrected. I was happy to jibe 1'st around the boat and I think behind me was Aberli, Chris, Dan, Isaac, Rowen, Blair, Stratfold. Not sure where Peter, Diethelm, Bjoern etc was , but they must have been up there. I might have forgot to mention some, but hard to tell,,

Then the really deep off the wind to the next marks. Think Peter came up to me on 2nd or 3'rd leg and got a little ahead. I tried to hang on to him, but my jibe at 3'rd mark left me non planing for a while and I could see Peter pulling away more on the deep of the wind. All sailors behind me seamed to have same low wind situation for a short while.

Got going again and the helicopter came around, but went way to close to me on my leeward side. I saw it coming and could do nothing against the "suddenly headwind gust" that flatten me straight in the water. Chris passed me "laughing",, :).

I managed to pass past Chris again a little later going very deep and a little faster with my 9.4.

Then Patrick arrived and we had a good fight. He managed to pass below me and get in front to the last mark. The last leg inside was very tricky as we had to throw in 2 more jibes , to get through the reef. Patrick went way to far in on the inside and I jibed further out and could sail next to the "knee deep" reef on the outside. Next jibe was critical and I did actually jibe to early and could not make the gate (of 2 marks), so had to go off planing and drift down for 20meters. My "panic" eased as I saw the guys behind with the same problem...

Made it to the beach in 2nd -- stoked..

i bet it was worth the $500 worth of booze you drank and the $400 fin they snapped for you at the finish line.

that first mark confused a bunch of people at the front... lesson to be learnt- dont follow Dan

Right behind you Reflex.
I decided last minute to rig the Formula gear. 11.0m reflex and F161 board 70cm Deb fin. It was a bit of a handful on all but the last leg which was deeper off the wind than the others. - Yes not much wind but it was still a great day on the water if you got planning.
Stringer - BD was on a 9.2 - The other one he tried before the start was a 9.6.

hahaha I was upwind of all of them... lining up to do a slingshot into the first mark police boat overshot the first mark by a mile cos I couldnt go downwind enough... oops! I pumped past a few stalled out guys including Dunky ("mmmmmooooar power!").

nice writeup Jesper. Well done on the race too- and on making it to the pub . That was fun- especially the chopper attack...
