A cruel joke mate.

A friend from work replaced his 20 years old Sputnik with a 2013 carbon Futura a few weeks ago and is despairing...

Yes quite dismal.
I feel like I haven't sailed for a month.
What are we going to do with ourselves?

I can fully sympathise with that. The F2 Sputnik is one irreplaceable board

I had a 270 sputnik back in the days when I actually had some athletic ability and I sailed the paint off of it. Probably the best board I've ever owned.

I too went from a 14 year old board to a modern board(JP slalom IX) and the bloody thing took off so fast I nearly fell off the back of it. Your friend needs to be warned, the excitement and exhilaration he will soon experience may actually cause him to wet himself.

I don't know...he's pretty fast on it as is. I'm sure he'll handle it OK

I tried his Sputnik once in strong winds (I'm 100kg and his Sputnik is 85L) , and was impressed how fast it can get on that narrow shape. However, it didn't work too well on the ocean.
