Though unless your chasing a Techno raceboard I don't know why you'd bother?? Local shapers include NUDE (Perth) and Stone (Gero). Starboard make START boards if your chasing a big soft beginner board.

If you want to go cheaper and lower the (massive) environmental footprint when buying a board go local and support your local shapers. Or buy 2nd hand off seabreeze classifieds.

Actually I'm a well overweight beginner who needs a (very) large volume board (aka "Nimitz" class) to get started . I've had a number of people suggest to me that many of the current run of beginners' boards (eg Starboard Start or JP Funster) are just too wide and short and therefore have some unwanted handling vices. This bloke (www.whitecapwindsurfing.com/rental/05firstgear.html) has a whole heap of suggestions, through which I became interested in having a serious look at a Bic Nova 240d. Without humiliating myself too much further, I'm told that I would need at least 200litres to begin with.

After trying walking, riding and swimming I decided I needed something that would give me a seriously good workout as well as being enough fun to do more than 3 times before becoming totally bored. I've had a few hours of instruction and fun on a Start (200+ litres) and on a Funster (205 litres) and have therefore decided that windsurfing is it, and that I really do need the volume to get me started.

ps: There are 10 types of people ...
those who understand trinary
those who confuse it with binary
and those who don't know the difference.

how overweight are you??
I was 100kg when I started. I had a couple of lessions on 200litres plus Starboard Start boards. I bought a 148Litre Bic Techno 2 as My first board. It was a pain in the arse for the first few hours but much more fun in the long run as I could use it to get planning in the footstraps/harness and gybing. I still use it now when the wind is light.

Cor blimey, I aspire to 100kg . My age, fitness level and the fact that I've had a lot of spinal surgery over recent years preclude me from that rate of "getting going". I accept that it'll be a long hard road for me, so I wish to make it as easy as possible. The carrot needs to be close enough to be perceived as attainable .

Windsurfing is it. It is the only sport which has ever interested me enough to get a seriously good workout. It engages the body and the mind, so you never get bored. I love it so much I don't stop until I am exhausted.
It has the added advantage that you keep cool while doing it.
The only downside is the offseason where there is little wind.

Good on ya!

Bic Techno 205L for sale in Perth:
www.seabreeze.com.au/Classifieds/Windsurfing/Boards/~b-sqy/2010-Bic-Techno-293-293-cm-205-litres.aspx?search=EjQ0DoWvNYhdviLETtQUb9sQY9fTJm6C

Starboard's Rio range goes up to 266L and I'm sure there's equivalents for RRD and other popular brands. I rarely see Bic boards on the water. Don't take any review as gospel, there are a lot of options available to you even if you are limited to a high literage. Keep your eyes open you'll sniff out a deal I'm sure.

Heavyweight boards would probably be pretty specialist and therefore reducing their resale cost as demand is lower. You'll probably be able to hunt down some good 2nd hand deals for high literage boards, but Techno boards and the like will probably be the most expensive option considering they belong to a racing class.

Thanx Pricey,

Yea, I saw that one. Sure looks interesting to me, but is far outside my budget. I'm trying to do this on a -ve (or at least extremely limited ) budget. Notice all my pleadings in these very forums for cheapie or give-away bits. I also figured that although it has the volume I require it's also probably a very hi-tech racing kit, and therefore not entirely suited to a beginner. Alas!!

I have available to me a mint condition JP Funster 205, but was just doing my last bit of homework before commitment. I know that 205 litres will float me high and dry enough. While the Funster certainly does fit the bill re large volume and beginner oriented, I figured that I'd have a look at the Bic if I could find one.

Any'ow, I have most of the rest together and will be out on the water at Easter I hope.

Many thanx one and all for your input,
Dinsdale

I have an 08 Bic Nova 170 that I was thinking of letting go! I am around 110kg and its more that enough to get me waterstarting, beachstarting and uphauling and it planes well once you get there. You're welcome to take it for a spin if you're interested she is a pretty good beginner board nice and gentle on the knees if nothing else. Probably a little closer to the beginner scale of things when compared to the funster which is more beginner / intermediate in my opinion anyway I struggled with the funster as a total beginner, I found the Nova a little more stable, but if you Persevere you might get an extra season out of it before you're ready to move on to something smaller.

Thanx for your response, but I've now got a Funster.

Only if you're in Albany. But you're welcome to come on down when you want some wind. Last couple of days have been regrettable, but there's about 15 to 18 knots happening out there right now.

Cheers
