Anyone prone foiling on a longer board say 5'0 x 19 50L ish? just thinking if would get into softer waves bit earlier and still be good for winging when windy. I'm 92kg

buddy has developed Omen brand...he's riding the 60L for light wind winging, but also for prone in challenging conditions...small waves, lots of current or chop. The board is 60L 5' 2.5" x21"x 4". He swears by it and I am convinced, I think it may be a good one board travel option for wing and prone.

My daily board is a JS Bennetts 29L

But I'm currently having a custom Konrad Stryk built which will be 5'5 x 17 @55L

These kind of boards are often referred to as "mid-lengths" and should have incredible paddle speed following on from the downwind sup trend of "long and skinny"

Whilst I can comfortably ride my 29L this new board will be for real small days, bay runs and if I ever get good at winging would be good for that as well.

Check out Konrad Stryk
Amos Sultan Prone
Majek Burner X
Unifoil Quiver Killer
DC makes something similar as well

I normally ride a 4'8" JS prone board but I recently got Jimmy Lewis to make me a custom 7'0" "mid-length" prone board that is a baby version of my 7'6" downwind board & this thing foils & paddles a treat...After seeing a lot of the big guys pronong their barracuda's on Maui last year I thought i'd get him to make me a real mid-length like my Channel Islands 6'10" mid length i ride when the surf dictates... so much fun & foils just as well but paddles into the littlest bumps or bigger surf....

Yeah 100% a little mid length would help you get into the waves earlier and can be quite fun on the right days. Plus if done right they make sick semi sinker wing boards!!
Here's one I made our of scraps that is 5'5 x 19 x 50L and this board is sick, gets up so easy prone or on the wing, I was actually surprised at how easy it gets up with the wind wing compared to my old semi sinker.
It actually works so well I am about to make myself another one this time not using scraps and leftover materials

Been doing a few little customs like this lately and definitely something good to have in the quiver.

Tried a 7'8 in waves with paddle and wing, it's not my thing just too much board which is why I'm thinking 5'0 instead on 5'5. Want to try and get down to 2 boards instead of 3 as wind is too gusty even when it's windy for me to wing a 35L prone board and prone is not my main thing so don't mind compensate bit of extra size on prone but don't want it to feel long,
current boards are- lightwind wing 5'3x 23 83L windy wing 4'9 x 22 65L prone 4'6 38L.
sold my 7'8 dw board as its no good for downwind here and felt too long to wing and sup in waves

Just my opinion but I think you've got to get to that 5'6 (x 20"ish) length to get the noticeably benefit in getting into waves early compared to a typical 4'6 prone. Additional volume helps but you need that length. 5'6" is still super short in surf board terms. I've winged my DW Sup (6'7 x 21.5") and it's a handful. 5'6 x 21" feels barely any different swing weight wise to my 4'10 x 24 wing board

This is my DC 5-5 x 20 x 55 litre Dale has made close to 20 of these . The foil drive crew use them plus guys just wanting an easier board to paddle . Mid lengths are popping up everywhere. The paddle speed is pretty amazing compared to my 4-6 and that makes catching waves so easy .

Yeah like everything where you win in one area you will loose in another, paddle speed and just how easy it catches waves would really help someone who maybe can't pump that great anyway so there wave count might go up but if you can pump around for 20 minutes or more already then maybe the mid length is not really needed.

Mine is only 2.6kg so really it feels like a prone on the weight side which also helps once up. I could still pump it around for an hour if conditions were right just not quite as easy maybe as my 4'6

Here is a pic to compare what I ride, black board is 4'6 wide point back with very little nose area, pink board is the 5'5 semi sinker and the white one is my slim tail 4'6. All feel good but all feel quite different. Paddle speed on the 5'5 kills the other two.

It is not just the pump that is compromised but also taking off in steep sucky waves up to shoulder high becomes very difficult and is definitely easier on a small board. In very slow breaking waves you can get in a little easier and earlier but a lot of people will be disappointed with not actually catching waves that don't break. You will still need a wave that is so very close to breaking it actually feels like it will break before these boards shine.

Even proning a barracuda still requires the wave almost nearly breaks. Now suping will definitely let you catch waves that never break.

I'm 72kg, use a 50L 5ft board for proning and winging. Great to just have 1 board in the car for both. It is easy to paddle into waves, pumps ok. Great for winging.

I've been using a Amundson Uncle Nubby 5'2" x 23" at 62L for prone & winging for a couple of years. I've even been able to strap a FoilDrive Assist+ to it.
At 72kg, it's a beautiful wing board for me. It works okay for prone, but sometimes I feel it's a bit too wide & pushes water instead of gliding over it. It's definitely a benefit over a shorter, lower volume prone board when doing the 400m paddle back after a long ride. I love having a single board that I can use for everything.

Gong Lethal 5''4 x 21 7/8' x 54L FSP Pro with foot strap inserts. A great mid length. Had one. Loved it. Sold it for something sexier and now regret it. The story of my life. Mid lengths rule.

Picked up my mid-length today! 5'5 x 17 x 4.25 @55L Pictured next to my JS Mister Bennetts 4'5 @29L which I absolutely love so looking forward to getting this board out in some decent conditionsFirst impressions is build is amazing but it's also super light which was one of my bigger fears "upsizing"
