Artificial Reef off Coolangatta spawns new fishing Tournamen
The $900,000 reef is designed to foster the booming recreational fishing hobby in the area, as well as provide a solid boost to the Gold Coast’s Tourism Industry.
Expected to be constructed by January 2015, the structure is built from individual steel modules which look kind of like a pyramid. Encased in concrete, the modules will be pre-fabricated by a WA based company called Subcon Technologies, who tell us that the reef will provide the perfect habitat for a variety of game fish.
Adding to the attraction, is the fact that it’s being dropped only three kilometers offshore, which puts it within easy reach of your average tinny, and even stand up paddle boards.
The event, run by the Heads Hotel in Shoalhaven (which has it’s own fishing club), is seeking more than 250 anglers for the event, however we’re still waiting for dates on when it’s going to happen. It will (of course) be after the reef is in place which according to the local council, is sometime around Christmas this year.
