Celebrities stand up for recreational fishing in Victoria.

This week five of fishings biggest names stood up to the local councils and Vic Fisheries in an attempt to re-zone Port Phillip bay to a recreational fishing haven.

Rex Hunt, Paul Worsteling, Lee Rayner, Al McGlashan and Adam Royter were the five in question, citing recreational fishing as a 2 billion dollar industry in Victoria alone, as well as a fantastic way to get the residents of the state out on the water.

“This is a true win-win situation. It would generate much needed economic activity for Victoria, would create real marine conservation benefits and protect fish stocks for future generations.” Said ‘Big Fish, Small Boats’ host Al McGlashan. “Port Phillip Bay would become a truly family-fishing friendly place for future generations.”

A proposal has now been submitted to the major political parties in Victoria, all that’s left is to wait for a response, but things aren’t looking good for the fishing haven proposal. Minister for Agriculture, Jacinta Allan was forthcoming in a radio interview after seeing the proposal, saying;
"I would also like to emphasize that we will not be opening up the existing marine parks to any additional recreational fishing activity, but won't be introducing any new marine parks into Victorian waters."

While the hold on new marine parks is (in some ways) good, it’s not exactly the Recreational Fishing Haven being asked for by Victorian Anglers. Official responses from the parties are expected by the end of next week, and if supported could set a fantastic benchmark for other states to follow suit.

If you’d like to support the campaign, get in touch with your local politician and tell them about it!
