Native species rescue at Merran Creek
New South Wales' Fisheries officers have been busy at Merran Creek near Swan Hill undertaking an unusual rescue of native species suffering from the creek's reduced water levels.
More than one hundred Murray Cod ranging from 25-120cm, twenty golden perch from 15-40cm and six silver perch from 15-30cm have been rescued so far in the effort to remove and relocate the species.
Fisheries officers worked with local property owners in waterholes ranging from 50cm to 2.5m deep using methods such as electro fishing units, small drag nets and scoop nets to capture the fish which were then placed in a salt solution and quickly released in the Wakool River at Stoney Crossing.
Funding for the work came from a Murray Darling Basin Authority grant.
