New limits for Victoria's Venus Bay Pipis
Victorians with a love for digging their toes and fingers into the Venus Bay sand for pipis will soon have their daily bag limits reduced by over 50 percent under new Department of Primary Industries restrictions.
Up until Friday 25 May 2009 the daily bag and possession limit will remain at five litres (including shells) per person, following that date the limit will drop to two litres per person.
Over the past years pipi harvesting has become more and more popular with fishers and families collecting the shellfish for bait or food. These increasing levels of popularity are the reason behind the change in regulations.
Recreational anglers collecting pipis must also be in possession of a current Recreational Fishing Licence and are unable to use any tools to find them other than their hands and feet.
The Victorian Recreational Fishing body, VRFish, have expressed their support for the changes.
