Australia's kite shops go head-to-head at KiteJam!

November is shaping up to be the biggest month in kiteboarding this year, with not one, but three huge events happening on the East Coast.

The first, KiteJam, is shaping up to be absolutely huge with team based competition making it a truly unique event, lining up shops and brands against one another to see who is the best in Queensland. They’ll be doing battle off the Gold Coast, in front of Main Beach where 20kt seabreezes roll in every afternoon and the waves are always pumping.

The idea is simple, four days of competition, one big jam session. Every rider competes, and every rider votes. Winners get decided by the riders, with some extra awards being handed out by the Judges. There’s thousands worth of prizes on offer, as well as the ultimate glory of being the best team on the water.

The beauty of the whole team thing is that it plays on the rivalries already happening at the beach. Team riders from competing shops play a constant game of catch up, pushing both to improve their skills. When you consider every shop in Queensland is going to be there, plus stacks more local teams, it makes for some very entertaining viewing. For the past two years Kite Jam has been one of the highlights in the season for QLD kiters, and this year, it’s going to be bigger than ever.

In addition to the riding, there’s a movie night on the Friday, where riders can throw down the gauntlet with their own promo videos amidst stacks of pizzas and soft drink in the park. The social event is perfect for up and coming riders wanting to show off their latest moves, or pimp their new sponsors a little more than they already have in the forums. Plus the oooh’s, and ahhhh’s during the crash sequences are nothing short of hilarious. Entry to the movie night is included in your entry fee, and if you’re bringing a friend it’s only an extra $10 entry.

Presentation is on Sunday, with twenty awards being handed out. Twelve of which are judged by the riders. The best kite Team walks away with $1000 cash, and Kite Jam champion (a single rider) leaves with $500. Both freestyle and wave riding will be judged, this year in two separate zones to avoid people handle-passing through the poor guys trying to surf.
