Getting Wings - Making a carbon kite-hydrofoil video

That carbon dust sure gets messy!
If you're a regular in the kiteboarding forums then you'll know all about the hundreds of home-made hydrofoil projects being started around the country. But making a foil isn't as easy as you might first think! While it can be done with an old skateboard deck and some 2x4, shaping something with a little more class is more akin to surgery than carpentry. Getting Wings is a time lapsed video of one guy and his quest to build an all-round kiteboarding hydrofoil for cruising around on.

He's obviously worked with carbon before, as the techiques used are not-your-average first time proceedures! Vacuum bagging, while not all that difficult, most certainly has a 'knack' to it. He's also got some serious tools in his shed to make things easier, right down to the special suit he's wearing to keep the epoxy off him. From shaping the mast, laying up the cloth and drilling the various components, this is one of the most complete hydrofoil build videos on the internet right now. Not to mention the fact that this guy also made his own board! Check it out to see all the work that goes into making a kiteboarding hydrofoil, and an insight into why they're so expensive to buy! If it doesn't put you off making your own, then make sure to have a read of our how-to guide for making your first hydrofoil
