Light Winds Ground NKL For Round 1
Three days with a max wind speed of 10 knots, kept riders grounded for all but huge foil kites and hydrofoils. "It was a picture perfect weekend for beachgoers on the Gold Coast but the wind gods weren't in our favour," said David De Witt, President of Kiteboarding Queensland & Northern Territory Inc. (KBQNT) and NKL Event Director.
"We need at least 15-20 knot winds to launch kites, but Saturday offered less than 10 knots and Sunday was even calmer, averaging less than 5 knots even into the afternoon. It's disappointing for our Queensland competitors however there's one thing we can't control - and that's the weather."
"Most competitors still came down from the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane or up from the Tweed to enjoy a few days hanging out on the beach, but it doesn't compare to launching a kite and getting out there in great kiting conditions."
So where else in the world can you find great kiting conditions with reliable wind? Perth, and that's where Round two of the NKL is headed next; to 'The Pond' at Safety Bay this weekend the 25th to 27th November.
