Merimbula hosts the 2014 National Wave Titles

Tucked away on the far southern coast of NSW is Merimbula, but if you’ve a kiter you know that, because every year Merimbula hosts the biggest kiteboarding event on this side of the country, the Merimbula Classic.

This year, one week before the iconic event, Kiteboarding Australia is hosting the 2014 National Wave Titles, at the beach just around the corner from the Merimbula Classic, at Short Point. The exact dates are below, and entries have just opened this week for the surfing competition, which is charged at $60 per rider.

Short Point is the ugly ducking beach of Merimbula. In contrast to Main Beach with it's white sand, blue water and picturesque views to the south; Short Point is rocky, the swell can be choppy, and there’s usually no bikini babes.

But.

It throws out an epic beachie in the North East Seabreeze’s. Something that runs like clockwork down in Merimbula, so it’s a sure thing to get at least a couple of heats and a final in during the week long event. With swell sizes in the 2-6ft range that time of year, it’s very likely the event will be held in classic Australia surfing conditions. Cross onshore, wind blown and in the 20 knot range, what better way is there to crown Australia’s best surfer?

Of course if the wind goes South, they’ll move the event to Main Beach, (the pretty one) but during November that’s quite rare.

Judging the riders will be PKRA Judge, Alexander Lewis-Hughes, as well as Chris Wardell of Project Kaizen, an initiative aimed at improving kids skills in the art of wakestyle. Rumour has it that Keahi will be on location too, if he can’t ride he’ll probably get to write some scores on a card and contribute to the judging.

If you’re interested in attending the 2014 National Wave Titles, get online and register before the 19th of November (that’s just before the event). For more information, check out the Merimbula Sailboard Club’s website here.
