Moreton Bay covered in debris from Brisbane Floods
Since the flooding began last Monday, constant south-easterly winds have pushed debris straight into Brisbane's most popular kitesurfing beaches - Brighton and Sandgate, causing safety concerns for both kiteboarders and beach goers. As the waters subside in Brisbane, it's becoming more apparent how much debris has already been washed into the bay. Entire houses have broken up and disappeared into the river, boats were pulled from pontoons, then the pontoons themselves washed down river too. All of this is now in the bay, and making it's way to Brighton and Sandgate quickly. |

By Thursday afternoon several floating pontoons had beached themselves on the sand flats. The police and fire brigade began fishing dangerous objects from the water, and spraying disinfectant powder everywhere. Rubbish lay in huge piles, cleaned up by the concerned public who lined the rock walls, watching in disbelief. A plastic kids trike got pulled from the water, then a gas tank full of helium. |

It wasn't all bad though - Kiteboarders were first to begin cleaning up, at 6am the beach was full of familiar faces cleaning up, and most stayed for the morning. A few kiters made the decision to go for a ride - but most left their kites in the car and hit the beach to help out, eager to get their favorite beach back to normal. For a windy day, it was weird seeing so few kiters out. No lessons, the schools have shut down for the weekend. No dog walkers, no kids throwing fists full of mud, just mess all over the beach. It's transformed one of the safest beaches in QLD to one of the most dangerous all in a matter of days. This weekend we're urging kiters to think twice about riding. In two days we've made a huge difference to the beach. It looks so much better, and the council's been hugely appreciative of everybody's efforts. We invite all kiters to come down this weekend and join us in cleaning the beach, the whole community would hugely appreciate any time you can donate. |
