Pro's boost double-kite-high in Cape Town - King of the Air
It's almost as windy in Australia, but with winds reaching well into the 40 knot range (with one day hitting 52!) at the now famous spot called Big Bay, riders like Aaron Hadlow and Nick Jacobsen are hard at work, putting in hour upon hour of training on kites as small as 5m. They're going absolutely huge too, with mega-loops that defy belief being chucked left-right and centre from not just the pro's, but the locals too!
None could top Hadlow though, with the five time world champ finally cracking the big one, with a WOO on board to record it - a jump as high as a kite at zenith! That's 24.8m to be exact, with most kite lines being 24m these days, he's well and truly above and beyond what defines a 'boost' in this sport. Take into account the fact that most kites don't fly around at zenith, instead at a 45 degree angle which puts them at just over 10m high, and Hadlow has just cracked the double kite high boost.
"Yesterday was by far the windiest day in Cape Town this season." Explained Hadlow, "I went out for an afternoon kite loop session around 3pm and ended up jumping 24.8 meters high!!!"
He did it with a North Vegas, that sweet-sweet 5 line machine that's been throwing riders into the air for years. The 2016 version Hadlow is using is ultra-high aspect, and hitting the nail squarely on the head for both big boosting and freestyle riding. A jump like that will be hard to beat with current technology, but the riders are all saying that 30m is possible with the perfect storm…
Stay tuned for all the Red Bull King of the Air action this week, as the pro's all arrive in Cape Town for what could be the most spectacular event of the season.
