Who's Evan Netsch?
Moving to the Outer Banks and kiting since he was 11 years old, as a little kid he grew up surfing and windsurfing. He did like most kids do when they try kiteboarding for the first time, they ask their parents to sell their windsurfing gear and buy a kite! 12 years later he’s the Mid Atlantic Rep for Cabrinha and kiting every chance he gets. Not too shabby for a guy in his early 20’s.
He got our attention however, by posting this little movie of his trip to Baja, Mexico. With obvious influences from Keahi De Aboitiz and Aaron Hadlow, this guy’s got the moves on both a surfboard and a twintip, stomping some silky smooth moves and massive aerials. Another great little point about this movie, is the fact that he stomps so many tricks without needing to cut the clip immediately after landing. Doing so makes us wonder whether the rider in question really landed and rode away, or if they skipped out onto their backs and wiped out a millisecond later. Leaving the whole landing shows you what a rider is really about…
Pay particular attention to the move at 2:07. It’s a carving turn with a backroll to toeside thrown in at the end. That’s classy riding right there, and a trick you can do yourself with only a few attempts! Here’s how.
Come into a carving turn with stacks of speed, your kite low and a strong switch to toeside. Carve around as you bring the kite overhead, and look for your takeoff point as the kite crosses 12 o’clock. Pop into a backroll and as you come around for landing, keep the rotation going and land to toeside. (Prerequisites: Carving turns, backrolls, landing toeside.)
Check out the video below, and say a mental ‘thanks’ to Even next time you wow your friends with that trick!
