2009 Flying Dutchman Worlds Day Two

11:58 AM Tue 4 Aug 2009 GMT
Today, the 3rd of August, two races were sailed in The Brita Waterfilter International Flying Dutchman World Championship.

The forecasts for today predicted light winds and so the day started with a postponement of one hour. When the first race started at 12:00 exactly, the race course was overshadowed by a dark cloud at the right side. This gave the FD sailors a hard choice for the first up wind beat. Should they start at the right side of the line and tack to the cloud immediately, or should they start at the slightly favoured left side of the line.

At the top mark the outcome of this situation was very clear. The one team that did tack to the cloud immediately was the NED 55. They rounded the first three marks in first position. Some of the big teams, such as HUN 70 Szabolcs Majth?nyi and Andras Domokos, GER 199 Dirk Bogumil and Michael Lisken and the GER 202 J?rn Borowski and Andreas Berlin had a great start at the left side, but failed to get to the right hand side in time to benefit from the better windspeed and angle. They had to fight their way back to the front in the rest of the race. This was done skillfully by the HUN 70, who won the first race.

NED 32 Bas and Mark van der Pol did very well today with a second and a first place to reach a second place in the provisional results. NED 26 Enno Kramer and Ard Geelkerken won the first race in the blue fleet and finished fifth in the second. The favourite DEN 21 J?rgen and Jacob Bojsen-M?ller didn't do so well in the first race today, they had to settle for a 12th position, but they are stil in the race for the title.

At the end of the second race the windspeed dropped to zero. The yellow fleet finished just in time, but for the blue fleet the last few meters of the race required heaps of patience and concentration. After that the boats were towed back to the Regatta Centre for a well deserved happy hour and a tasty championship dinner.
