Around the world in 10 feet Pt 2 - World Record Attempt
Smaller than most children's trainer dinghys, the Yrvind TEN is one of the most unique boats you’ll ever see. 10ft long and weighing 1.5 tonnes, it features twin masts, a forward mounted centerboard and bubble dome on the deck with enough space to fit the sailors head. Since we last brought you the story about Mr Yrvind, he’s explained a little more about the unique design of the little boat.
Saying on his website and blog about the journey, Mr Yvrind explains:
“Rig choices belong to the domain of aerodynamics, right – wrong. A cruising boat is much more complex than a racer. Naturally I will be glad if my novel rig also can propel the boat. A small cruising boat is a complex thing and I may have made mistakes somewhere along my thinking. Although untried I am willing to bet on this side by side rig.
Racing boats are designed with racing rules in mind. Consequently the almost universal custom is to design rigs in such a way that you get maximum effort per sail area. That implies tall rigs with one mast. I see it differently. I am not racing therefore I do not worry about efficiency per square meter sail area. I design for the shortest possible mast. A deep water cruiser have to withstand the seas worsts fury. When it starts to blow a boat with a short mast is much more weatherly than one with a tall mast.”
As you might have deduced, he’s referring to the unique twin masted design of his 10ft craft. See it in model form in the picture above. You can’t argue with the guys logic, and when you read the full blog entry on his ideas and concepts for the boat, it all begins to start sounding reasonable. But then you re-read the 10ft long part, and sanity prevails.
We’re looking forward to his adventures as they unfold!
