Aussie Youth Sailing Team heads for Portugal

Starting this weekend, Australia’s best young sailors are engaging in tactical warfare of the maritime variety, off Tavira, Portugal in the ISAF Youth Sailing Worlds.

With fresh new faces making up most of the team, and two returning sailors, Australia has a team full of very young athletes. Jock Calvert, a windsurfer in the Techno Class from Tasmania, and Lachlan Gimour from WA in the 420 class both participated in the worlds last year.

Team Manager Brendan Todd says the Australian Youth Sailing team is ready to get on the water: “We have all arrived safely and the team is very excited to start racing on Monday. We have used this week to familiarize ourselves with the venue, acclimatise and set-up the boats, which are supplied to us by the organisers and get some training sessions in before it all starts.”

With trainers like Brendan Todd, Belinda Stowell and Larry Cargill mentoring the team, we’re prepared to see some fantastic results over the next few years as the team matures into Olympic level sailors!

Good luck to the Aussie Youth Team!
