Light winds make for slow racing - Volvo Ocean Race
After a foggy start in Abu Dhabi earlier this week, the crews aboard Volvo Ocean 65’s are still putting along very slowly in winds of 2 knots at most.
With winds so variable, racing is tight and technical with no boats choosing to leave the pack in search of better air. A high pressure system currently sits over the fleet, leaving the yachts wallowing in sub 10 knot breezes and race leader, Dongfeng Race Team still in front. The Chinese team led the race since Abu Dhabi, and with just under 4000nm to go, are still extending their lead over the remaining 5 teams.
Racing to Sanya, China, the crews are not only battling light winds, but the Pakistani Navy as the navigate the sensitive waters in the middle east. Completely excluded from Iranian waters, the crews spent most of yesterday sailing right along the line, which race organizers themselves have imposed to prevent any dramas for the race. There’s also an ‘ice limits’ exclusion zone which prevents the fleet from getting too far south.
Out of the race still is Team Vestas Wind. After running around near Maurititius, the team is franticly repairing their boat in time for the next event starting in China. At least with these light winds, they might have more time to get ready!
