Damaging Doheny makes for exciting Pacific Paddle Games

Last weekend the world saw a side of Stand Up Paddling that few have ever seen, and most likely won't ever see again. The Pacific Paddle Games at Doheny Beach was one of the most extreme examples of stand up paddling competition. Ever... Doheny is famous for a several things, but most of all the shorebreak, which dumps walls of water on the beach with a fury known only to those looking mercifully up at the lip. Once paddlers get past that, it's time to tackle the 6ft+ swell out the back, chockas full of 12'6" stand up paddleboards left behind from the wiped-out pack in front. That was the scene last weekend during the Pacific Paddle Games, but it made for spectacular viewing. Thanks to the guys from Rogue SUP, they've put out a highlights reel from the Mens, Womens and Groms Battle of the Paddle, and distance paddling events. It features the epic sprint to the finish by Connor Baxter to take the Distance finals, the obliteration of groms when they were sent out into the biggest set of the day, and a cringe-worthy blow to the head for Connor Bonham. He had to be pulled from the water and stitched up after the nose of a very pointy board hit him right in the forehead. Bet he wishes it was a Starboard Allstar now! Aside from the injuries, the event wasn't without controversy, Aussie paddle Beau O'Brian left a scathing remark on social media after it was alleged some paddlers didn't go around one of the marks. You can see the kind of thing he's talking about in the video below, which gets pretty messy! Check out the footage to see some incredibly extreme stand up paddle racing at Doheny Beach, California during this years Pacific Paddle Games.
