A world first stand up paddling event is making it's debut on the Gold Coast in September - the Red Bull Watermaze.
Billed as something similar to Stand Up Paddling around an Orienteering course, details are scarce on exactly what's going to happen during the Red Bull event. They say the event
*encourages competitors of all abilities to test not only their SUP skills, but also their endurance and strategy as they find their way through 6 checkpoints while weaving through 8km of the iconic Gold Coast waterways.*
If you've ever checked out the canal system around Runaway bay, you know it's pretty full-on. Add 250 stand up paddlers to the mix and it's set to be an incredible event.
The actual course won't be released until moments before the race begins - that's the point of this crazy event! Paddlers will have to find their own way around the course in the fastest possible time, so tactics will play a huge role in who wins, an interesting concept compared to the battles of technique and strength the sport is so used to seeing.
Entry is now open for $30 per person, and there's both 12'6 and 14ft divisions for men and women. Naish One design boards will also be on offer for those wishing to compete in the N1sco division.
