Stand Up Paddler takes on 'The Wedge' unscathed.

Not a place you normally see Stand Up Paddlers... Photo: Joe Foster
It’s very unusual to see anything but skimboarders and bodyboarders at ‘The Wedge’ on the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, California. With waves reaching 10m high on occasion, and one of the gnarliest dumps you’ll ever see, it’s not the place for a stand up paddle surfer.

Unless you’ve got titanuium ones, or your name is Daniel Hughes. July 6th saw some decent sized dumpers rolling into the Wedge, some say the sets were getting close to the 8m mark, and the lineup was full of bodyboarders. Amongst them, was Daniel Hughes, a stand up paddler known for getting into extreme places with a paddle in his hands. You might also know him from the Abu Dhabi All Starts event at the Wadi Wave pool earlier this year, where he made the finals.

Anyway, he drops into a monster on a tiny stand up paddle board, takes the bottom turn and then bails over the lip. As far as sketchy closeout waves go, we’d give that a 10. Check out the extreme stand up paddling video below.
