Twelve Towers Postponed - Paddlers score epic conditions!

Cyclone Marcia, just a few hundred km's north of the event site.
While QLD cleans up after Cyclone Marcia, stand up paddlers are making the most of some epic downwind and surfing conditions on offer between the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Unfortunately, due to the category 5 cyclone forecasts, the Twelve Towers downwind race was postponed on the advice of the surf life savers and martime authority. A wise choice, which nobody argued with considering all the beaches were closed! A rescheduled date has not been posted for the event yet, but you’ll hear about it first in the Seabreeze forums!

Seeing all these hotshots were on the Gold Coast anyway, of course they decided to break out the shortboards and hit the solid 8-9ft waves peeling off Kirra and Currumbin points. Sheltered from the strong Southerly winds, these two spots were relatively uncrowded considering the swell! On a typical Saturday morning one would expect to see almost 100 surfers in the lineup, not this weekend though, it was more like 5!

Meanwhile, up in Brisbane the conditions were perfect for downwind paddling. Several paddlers made the most of the southerly wind and enjoyed larger than average runners in the bay. It was raining and pretty nasty though!

Keep your eyes on the forums for a new date for the Twelve Towers event, and remember, if you’re going to head out in a cyclone, make sure you know what you’re getting into!
