What Nasties Are Lurking Inside your Stand Up Paddle Board?

Back in 1989, a company called Surftech began, with the purpose of developing surfboard technologies that would change the sport. In 2017, they're continuing the quest, but this time they've taken a different approach which is far more sustainable.

You might have heard of the non-for-profit organisation called 'Sustainable Surf', which is all about transforming surf culture into a powerful force for protecting the ocean playground. Already they've done some fantastic work with events and stand up paddle board companies to help limit the amount of harmful byproducts in the production process.

This year, Surftech have teamed up with Sustainable Surf to launch their range of boards, dubbed 'Ecoboards'. "We're stoked to be working with Surftech, and excited to see a growing number of their boards carry the ECOBOARD Project logo," says Kevin Whilden, Co-founder, Sustainable Surf. "Surftech is a name that surfers and paddlers often associate with technology innovation and durability, and it's great to see the emphasis they are now placing on innovative ways to use renewable materials, reduce waste and improved energy use. Sustainable Surf conducts an annual audit of Surftech's factory to verify these sustainability commitments and has given Surftech the stamp of approval."

These boards use Sicomin GreenPoxy resin, which is made up of plant based ingredients (over 25%!), specially moulded EPS cores, which reduce foam wastage by up to 100%, and deck pads which are made from algae!

Without the special Ecoboard logos, from the outside you'd never know the boards were designed with the environment in mind. They're just as durable, and performance orientated as any other board. They just don't cost the earth!
