16 champions crowned at North Boomerang Beach.
Harley Ingleby - winner of Mens Open
Despite narrowly escaping elimination in his Open Mens semi-final, 2009 World Champion Harley Ingleby (Emerald Beach) was able to post a 16.30 total in the final to get the win ahead of fellow Coffs Harbour local Paul Scholten, Kai Ellice-Flint (Ettalong) and Jack Entwistle (Manly). The talented natural-footer proved he was one of the standout performers of the event, not scoring less than 14.00 in any of his heats. All finalists earned there spot on Team NSW for the upcoming Australian Surf Festival in August.
“This is such a consistent part of the east coast and it’s been amazing to have an event here. I’m stoked to win it,” said Ingleby. “It’s been a few years since I’ve done this event, but I definitely wanted to get down here this year because of this location and the fact the Aussie Titles are in my hometown [Coffs Harbour]. All the boys surfed great over the course of the final and it was awesome to share a heat with them.”
After claiming a runner-up finish and a win in the Open Womens finals, Lara Murphy (North Bondi) was able to pip Roisin Carolan (Binna Burra) for the overall Open Womens title. Both surfers locked in heat scores in the 13 point range over both respective finals, however Lara managed to get the win due to her holding a higher heat score. Both surfers booked their spot into the Australian Surf Festival in August.
Five men battled it out for the win in the second Over-35 Mens final, however after the halfway mark of the second final it became apparent it was a two horse race between Craig Munro and Steve Mills. Despite taking out the first final, Mills was unable to post the heat total required to take the overall lead from Munro and had to settle for the runner-up spot.
Brother and sister, Samson and Sienna Coulter (North Balgowlah) claimed the Under-16 Boys and Girls championships. Both surfers locked in wins across both their respective finals to nab the victory. Know primarily for their prowess on shortboards, the Coulters managed to lock in heat totals in excess 15 points and as a result cemented their position as junior NSW Longboard Champions.
Kirrah Cook continued her impressive run through the Under-18 Girls final. The North Coast surfer successfully took a clean sweep in both her finals to edge in front of Lily Ellis (Wooloweyah), Sarah Whilock (Port Macquarie), Madie Cunico (Collaroy) and Madi Daugaard (Green Point).
Joel Skinner (Yamba Waters) took two wins across the Under-18 Boys and Under-18 Boys Loggers. The talented goofy-footer notched up a 16.83 to take out the highly competitive Under-18 Boys division and 14.33 to claim the Loggers.
In the Open Loggers, Nick Farago (Corrimal) left his opposition fighting an uphill battle when he locked in his second perfect ten-point ride of the event as well as posting a near perfect 9.17 ride. Jared Eason (Burraneer) put up a commendable effort, but unfortunately had to settle for the runner-up position with a heat total of 14.66.
Debbie Allan (Noraville) added another NSW Title to her mantelpiece when she took out the Over-35 Womens. Despite scoring an interference in the final, Allan was able to notch up a heat total of 11.29 and still reign supreme over Vivienne Cresswell (Collaroy Plateau), Elizabeth Murray (Smiths Lake) and Kelsey Guy (Valla Beach) who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.
Richard Smith (Sawtell) was able to claim victory across the Over-50 and Over-45 Mens Longboard finals. The six-times Australian Champion locked in multiple scores in the eight and nine point range to get the nod ahead of Gary Burden (Suffolk Park) in the Over-50 Mens and John Schmidenberg (Emerald Beach) in the Over-45 Men. As a result Smith, booked his spot into the Australian Surf Festival in Coffs Harbour in August where he will battle for a seventh title.
