Big Wave Surfers Compete at the Worlds Heaviest Beachie

Australia's Jamie Mitchell has taken home what might be the last ever trophies from the worlds heaviest beachie: Nazar? in Portugal.

While it wasn't a day for the record books, it was pretty gnarly. Up there with the Eddie Aikau event in Hawaii this year. It was big, it was messy and the worlds best had their A-Game on as they paddled into 20ft monsters.

It was the Nazar? Big Wave Challenge, one of the World Surfing Leagues Big Wave Tour and it turned out to be one epix display of big wave surfing. Australian Jamie Mitchell took the trophy, with some silky smooth rides thanks to impeccable wave selection. He's in the pocket, laying down smooth turns and outrunning giant foamballs like it was nothing.

Some competitors didn't have much fun though, like Twiggy Baker who has vowed never to compete at Nazar? again. He says it's too dangerous, "Nazare as a wave is a phenom, as challenging and beautiful as any big wave I've surfed but the dangers involved seem to outweigh the rewards. Those 20 minutes during each heat, on the back of a ski, holding on with all your strength while jumping 10 foot foamies, were some of the most terrifying experiences of my life and something I can't see myself repeating?"

Would you still like to see the worlds best compete in some of the gnarliest waves in the world? Or should it be left to the record breakers and the daredevils? Watch the highlights below.
