Foil Surfing in Raglan - Laird Hamilton

Foilboarding is all the rage in kiteboarding and sailing right now, but for the surfers, foils are still very very niche. Except in Laird Hamilton’s case, he is the master of the hydrofoil.

Since forever, way back in that movie from Billabong he’s been towed into waves on a hydrofoil. No, he doesn’t look as graceful as a dolphin, in fact his arms are waving around all over the place in an attempt to balance on a teetering piece of carbon and aluminum. But do you see anyone else doing it?

We haven’t, at least not into solid waves like these beauties in Raglan, New Zealand. Known for its amazing left-handers, Raglan is one of those ‘bucket list’ surfing destinations for most waterman. Speaking of which, this little clip is somewhat of an ad for a new competition taking place this year in March. Called ‘The Ultimate Waterman’, the competition in invite only and will feature the likes of Kai Lenny, Mark Visser and Manoa Drollet. These guys will be surfing both long and shortboards, stand up paddle surfing, big wave surfing, stand up paddle racing and doing waka-ama endurance trials.

Liard isn’t competing, those days are apparently behind him, but he does endorse the event. We endorse his foilboarding, because he’s the only guy in the world doing it on waves like this!
