Master and Apprentice - Skipping School to chase slabs.
Russel Bierke is a name you may not have heard before, but rest assured, after this clip of him dropping in to a slabby left in Western Australia, he'll be on screens all over the world. Before you continue reading this, scroll down and watch the short 'Master and Apprentice'. It stars Mark Mathews, Aussie big wave legend who grew up surfing with the Abberton Brothers in Sydney, later conquering the worlds biggest and heaviest waves. But this movie isn't about him...
Go watch that movie now. That guy is only 17!!!!!!! Would you believe it, he's still in school and dropping in to one of the heaviest, most gnarly waves in WA. Best of all, he did it while seasick and with the sun in his eyes. "Russ Bierke is something else man." Tells the 'master', Mark Mathews, "The stuff he's doing, is pretty amazing. For sure he's the future of big wave surfing." The apprentice, that (young) man previously mentioned, recently scored the opportunity to surf a session with him in Western Australia. He copped a few on the head, got a little seasick and took more than a couple of tips on board, resulting in some great footage, and no doubt new skills that will help him on his journey to the Big wave World Tour. "To get the chance to hang out with Mark and chase big waves with him was incredible. He's the best slab surfer in the world and to learn with him was amazing." If you haven't already, watch 'Master and Apprentice', a surfing story about Mark Mathews and Russel Bierke going surfing together on a gnarly slab in Western Australia.
