Worlds First Inflatable Reef to be installed in Perth
Does your local break suffer from a case of close-out-itis?
Do you wish that mother nature would rearrange the sandbanks to form beautiful peeling beachies like you see in the magazines?
This kickerstarter campaign might just be the thing you’re looking for.
Designed and patented by a surfer from Perth, the ‘Airwave’ concept is quite simple. You find a beach with some decent swell, that’s just a little too deep for decent sets to break offshore. You take a couple of divers and anchor a large inflatable sail underwater, which deflects swell energy towards the surface and forms a 10 out of 10 scoring wave. This wave of course peels both left and right, features sponsors logo and has no adverse effects to the environment.
What could go wrong?
No really, the plan seems logical enough, all Troy Bottegal needs is 100 grand to make it happen. Like all new projects these days, he’s fundraising via kickstarter, and he’s 2% of the way there already. Donating to the cause gets you entry to a big party out the front of the Airwave when it’s operational, or if you donate BIG, you could be one of the first fifty surfers to surf the artificial wave.
“Imagine how amazing it would be if you could quickly install a wave - producing surf reef underwater, by merely anchoring a uniquely shaped sail on the bottom, blowing it up with air and then waiting for the next swell to produce waves on it!” says inventor of the AirWave, Troy Bottegal. He has big dreams of pop-up breaks all over the world, and it’s all starting right here in Perth.
