Poor Gaffy. One of the fairest and most hardworking in the game.
Looks to me like a jumper punch gone wrong. If the dockers weren't so soft there wouldn't be an issue. No because of the dockers glass jaw poor Gaffy is going to have the Brownlow taken off him, looses the chance to play finals, potentially a grand final.
My heart seriously hurts for him. Bloody dockers set him up.
No where near as bad as Barry Halls hit on Staker in 2007, he only got 7 weeks with no doubt it was deliberate.
All the talk of criminal and civil action would have scared the AFL CORP, and they had to give the maximum penalty.
Unfortunately the game will now be even worse, I wonder when they will stop showing the Brownlow on TV and just show the Umpires version of who's the best Umpy. Seems to be what the game is all about these days.

Meanwhile in Lombok 100 people dead, whilst hundreds flee...gets a mention on page 14.

It seems so out of character for Gaff. I'd always thought of him as a ball player.......hard but fair. I'd hate to see him miss a Granny

The bigger question for the AFL is?
What the hell are the umpiring fraternity doing? The three umpire system was introduced, and one of its charters was to stamp out the 'off the ball crap of harassment to players'.
Week in week out we see the likes of Dangerfield, Martin, Mitchell to name a few, cop the constant restricting of run and un-sportsman like conduct by harassing players well outside the given 5m off the ball rule.
The drongo umpire in Gaffs case, was directly watching this sh1t go down well before Gaff reacted. 
Had the system been adjudicated correctly, the ump would have pulled the play up as soon as the harassment started, and none of this ugly incident would have eventuated Umps awarding free kicks, soon has this crap stamped out. No coach is going to tolerate his players being free kicked against in the modern game.
The down side is now a young up and coming player has been side lined with physical facial damage, and will be with some high level of discomfort for considerable time.
A running mids player has to now live with this ugly tag for the rest of his playing career, and on into his after playing days. For a bloke like Gaff, a heavy mental burden.
Even the likes of Barry Hall who's make up is vastly different to Gaffs, still feels the mental anguish of his actions years after the event.
AFL is a bloody disgrace with its umpiring attitude.

How is this any difference, assault is assault, whether on a playing field or on a street.
The same as pedophilia is the same now in church or out in the real world.
Why doesn't the AFL have a player send off rule? Probably less effect on the game than in soccer or rugby, due to bigger teams, but it would be a sensible thing to do.

Unbelievable not a good outcomes for both involved and a very emotional reaction on all sides and as usual hyped by the media to maximise their return. The rivalry between the teams supporters is fierce and wouldn't be surprised to hear of punchups at backyard BBQ's over this some people just got nothing better going on in life, for what it is worth I love the game and bleed purple as has been mentioned the best ball players get scragged constantly without penalty but i think it goes to the coaches to set the tone of what they want as much as you can be an expert on the armchair would be a very difficult game to umpire can't even get dropping the ball calls right half the time due to the intensity and speed at this level.
I was at the game and was watching gaff alot of the time as thats the advantage of watching live - you see the off the ball work the tv (and the umpires) ignore. Saw it all happen. Gaff was being checked illegally and regularly all day. Brayshaw was blocking his run over and over, holding him down etc. It was just like gaff said - he tried to smack him in the chest to get a break and get to the next contest. Brayshaw propped and that dropped his head as gaff swung. Simple accident with bad consequences.
The real media and illinformed social media **** storm has just been sad to see. Trial by media and the AFL bought it. He shouldnt be in the same boat as barry hall who was a serial thug but history will show he is.
Lyon inflamed it for sure but i reckon deep down its cos he instructed brayshaw to make the illegal blocks and feels partly responsible..
checking is what you do as a tagger. its part of the game. punching in the head isn't.

Gaff squared up to him and let it rip. He is very remorseful. A lot of the fans cheered him and are dismissive of the facts. And the eagles brought their own umpire. The umpire that was banned from umpiring any other games for the eagles because of alleged bias.

huge chance for Dom Sheed to come in with a clear directive to "play gaff's role" and step up to the plate. i think he is capable, but time will tell!
the rhetoric above about bleeding purple and blue bloods is exactly what the media feed off... take a deep breath, it is only footy, both sides have valid points once you take the emotion out. 8 weeks is appropriate in this day and age, but i don't think anyone except the rabid die hards think that he actually meant to clock him on point on the jaw.
AFL to get rid of all the swinging arm strikes to bodies as well with suspensions these next weeks - watch some one will do a tummy tap for sure still and media frenzy will go off again!

yeah i love the "if it was on the street stuff". If a bloke jumped on me while i was walking down the street, sat on me so i couldnt get up then after i struggled free jumped in my way and grabbed me repeatedly while i was trying to move away i reckon plenty would say a whack for his trouble would be more than justified.
