I challenge all coffee snobs to pick the difference in taste between their $10 cafe one and quality beans in a one cup press thing done at home. Once u add the milk and sugar etc I bet none of you can.
Like wines where the experts even picked red and whites as the OTHER colour in blind tests. It's all keeping up with the Jones' w^nk
All depends on the beans and the roast. My home one is better than Starbucks drip coffee.
WOW. The responses have been epic.
I thought I would get one or two replies, not two pages in 24hrs haha.
Coffee really is a language of its own.
I probably should of stated budget, of $500-$700 for machine and grinder.
Yeah I should spend more but honest that is our max budget of cash laying around for a coffee machine right now.
Just had a couple of coffees at a mates that has a SUNBEAMEM5000 Cafe Barista "Manual Espresso" Machine with "Automated Milk Frother": coffee was magic.
We drink coffee with soy milk, we don't ruin it with that "cows pus" ;)
or I mainly drink it black.
This machine retails for $300 already found it cheaper online. this leaves enough to buy a solid good grinder as stated above and enough to buy a moka.
This sounds like a must and maybe the "moka" will be what i take to the office to use.

agreed.
and running water thru the ground beans at a certain temp is the same in a press, a Sunbeam and a $4K machine.
I've had a high end manual Breville machine ($750) with built in conical grinder for a few years now and it blows away all other machines I've had in the past. It seems like they assigned an engineering team to tackle all the problems in the older machines to come up with really solid reliable designs. Never had any issues with it and it gets used a lot. Grinding the coffee just before use is the only way to go.

Not really, no. Because dose size, grind size, tamp strength (compaction), water pressure, water amount, pre-infusion, water temp, & water temperature stability are all factors that differ between those methods.
Unless you are experienced enough to make a nice coffee I wouldn't buy a coffee machine.
Pods yes for convenience and consistent taste.
Holy fark 700$ budget...
I am in the wrong business.
Well you can have any NASA machine in the world but won't fix it if don't start with the real material (100% Arabica).
BTW 90% of the coffee sold in Australia that claims to be 100% Arabica are not, and you are been scammed.
I have a Delonghi Café Firenze. Steam powered. I think its just an electric variation on the Moka Pot.
Don't use the milk bit, take it black & strong.
Had it since 2000 when I got it free from some bank or airline points scheme.
Does me.

I like my Coffee Black with Nothing....
The Moka Pot gives you a shot of Coffee that you can vary to suit your needs/taste
its hard to go past for the price.....
Try is first
then spend the money if your not happy with the Taste
(Adding a drop or two of Coconut Oil can give a Rich Look/Taste)
Coffee is Coffee
We all like it different
and done in different ways.........
S018 ^^^^
Yeah I'm sold on the moka idea already, and will pick one up Monday.
We still want a auto type coffee machine though, I mean Mrs wants one
. We will use it. Guests will use it. Toddler loves a frothed chino to.

Not loaded, good income yes. but it's also the only income in this household so makes me no better off than most house hold incomes I'm sure.
Guess it just depends what you want to spend money on.
Right now we are debt free, no credit cards and go with out a lot of luxuries we were once used to.
If we can afford to spend easily $12 a day 7 days a week on take away coffee we can afford to take a hit of $700 upfront now and see the savings each fortnight over a period of time.
But if you are looking for a career change. Railway supply chain logistics pays well

for a 1-5% difference that you can taste?
That you can really taste and it is worth the quids?
OK
more like 50% to 100% difference in taste between a sh!t and good coffee, depending on a lot of factors
The coffee barista of the year suggested 63deg C as the best temperature. but also you need the right beans , right grind etc etc.
Try these beans, I've been in the hospo trade for a long time and I can tell you that there is a lot of cafes and boutique "roasters" that buy their beans from these guys. This is my preference for espresso.

.
As someone who owns/ has owned about 15 of these things, you might as well get the $15 one from big W/kmart etc and see if you like the sort of coffee they make. There's not a huge variation in taste between a cheap one and a pricey italian one (imho - I'm no coffee taster but I do like black). It's mostly looks, size, and the relative coffee basket size that changes.
Oh and when you look at the box cups = shots I guess, but it's not really strong enough to be espresso, so I've always though a "12 cup" will make like 4 smaller long blacks..

I am talking about the same beans same grind same water temp... i bet you can't tell the $2K machine from a press.
............And start it hot, water out of the kettle, then stop early by running the tap over the base before it starts spitting and steaming.
Pour immediately, and enjoy!
EDIT: bloody Mark cutting in again!
EDIT-EDIT::: Is that a red thumb I see above?
If cholesterol concerns you get a filtered type.
Unfiltered coffee contains a pretty potent cholesterol raiser.
I guess the Whole Milk has more cholesterol than the oil from the coffee.
x2 with Mark here. An expensive machine and a cheap press makes the same coffee (because people drink MILK in australia, with a bit of Coffee).
Only if you drink Black Coffee straight (no sugar either) you maybe pick a difference (in texture, not flavor) if made from the same between methods.
I will check the Rail-o-supplies....interesting.

i can tell the difference between a specialty brewer cup and a bialetti, cause I'm spitting out the little bits of grind after a bialetti. Also i can tell the difference between filter and a good machine. not sure about a press as never used one.
but its a bit like racing push bike, they increment in $20 amounts between $250 and $10,000. you pick a level.
i would like a taste test between all the machines in a shop to see the differences. sometimes its convinience
I prefer the pods due to consistently being good, simple and quick
I drink black only and can't tell much taste difference pods vs proper..
I buy pods with the highest caffeine level but don't get kick at all ...only proper brewed does that.
Kicks I am after..taste comes second..
Coffee Machines.
Of late between wife and I we are spending $12. a day 6/7 days a week on coffee and 90% of them are take away on the way to work.
Time to invest in a coffee machine,
Anyone got one. Whats good whats not?
Not a pod machine..
yeah but if you take up cycling like you are talking about you will spend even more time at coffee shops and spending more than $12, so this topic is essentially useless to you unless you decide not to cycle.....................

I dunno much about this coffe lark - tea for me, preferably out of a billy, olde schoole style.
But - the muppets at work have a coffee pod machine that can take 4 or 5 different brands of pods, makes it easy for staff to bring their own particular breed of plastic contaminated coffee to work.

Bhahahahahah I knew you would find this post big brother.
You cycle you haven't taken up coffee...
For a stove top, I'm a big lover of coffee, and imho this machine or piece of engineering makes one of the finest brews to cross my lips,
Mate has one from 1948 we love our smoko coffee
I've got one of these and use it every day. What it has highlighted is that even having the only variables of grind and tamping it's bloody easy to stuff it up. But I keep a pod machine on the bench for convenience and have a supply of teabags as a back-up.

Thats the difference, i dont drink coffee, that allows me to cycle without becoming a snob. you drink coffee, half a snob already, you will be too up yourself if you cycle and drink coffee hahahahahaahahaha
