I have 3 flyable 250 class racers... they make it look easy... it isn't. I wouldn't even be able to fly in such a confined space for long.
Everyone in the FPV scene use Fatshark or SkyZone goggles, I'm using a Sony HMZ-T3W I get a little lag, but much better rendition.
The actual quads a pretty cheap to build, but when you start adding up the FVP gear and repairs... it's not cheap.
You can get a good prebuilt for ~$500.
Last year I had an idea of streamed racing... but then I realized the US was already kind of doing it, I sucked at flying and hobbyshops don't have the money to make me rich.
I reckon in 10 years time drone racing's going to be really fun to watch... think Wipeout (PS game).
Bit like skatepark scooters or kiting

Those who flew real collective pitch heli's 10yrs ago (ie: fkn hard to fly) must be laughing their heads off at those who fly theses multicopters that pretty much fly themselves and then call this "racing".
It is about as skillful as Mario Kart.
I got as far as looping and rolls with cp hellies when I last flew, but I still recon this is awesome looking fun with the camera/goggles. it's like sitting in the pilot's seat
^^^ yeah looks great. I can see how it is fun.... but I still feel it is a great idea applied to a "too easy" platform
But stick the camera and the goggles system on a T-Rex600 and go race that. 
You would excel ............. these blokes would not bother trying.
I understand what you're saying. I wonder how much aid is provided by the processing? the full on helli 3d-ers are probably having a giggle
I'm amazed how cheap everything has become since I last bought stuff in 2009
Looks like fun and requires a lot of skill. But still, you're not on board feeling the G forces. So apart from the nuts and bolts what has it got that Grand Tourismo didn't have 20 years ago? Why bother with nuts and bolts?
^^ it is harder than flying for real, as you do not have the frame of reference being inside it.
Of the 8 things you do with two thumbs at the same time, in some orientations some controls are reversed. In other orientations different ones are reversed.
RC heli 3D is phenomenally difficult.
And every time you prang it, it costs a fortune and takes many hours to setup rotor head angles properly again.
Most peeps don't seem to get that, as they are only exposed to the little contra rotating things that virtually fly themselves like drones

I get what you say Mark but cost 2 gazillions dollar (on repairs mainly?) in the other hand quad is lot cheaper and accessible to every body! I had a 6 ch chopper and took me 2 flights to destroy it. I fly real planes and it is easier for sure!

Yes, but that's not the question, all those difficult to master phenomena could be accurately simulated in software. The cost of a prang could be simulated by an automated debit to your card. Grand tourism already had the tuning and setup challenges incorporated 20 years ago.

Spoken like someone who hasn't flown a 250 racing quad in FPV mode.
The guys in the clip are all flying in "rate" mode, ie no auto level. There's no frame of reference for you, no seat of the pants feel. It's very disorienting if you haven't done a lot of it. The first thing you'd do if you had a go would be to crash into the roof... throttle control is harder than a CP heli because there's a lot more lag due to the fixed pitch props.
And let's not even get into the skill of flying while the video is as glitchy as hell, just 'using the force' while you just get glimpses of where you are and where you're going...
So yeah. It's a long way from Mario Kart.

Gonewindsurfing, how good would it be if the controls for the drone you were in were onboard with you, so you could go wherever you want!

That would be because of the tremendous change in scale. Aerodynamic surfaces decreasing with the square of dimension but weight with the cube. Full scale helicopters have a response time suited to that of full sized people. Scaling helicopters down doesn't make sense at all, it's just random, you might as well put rotors on a broom stick and make it do loops. Horses for courses. Quad copters are the way to go when transporting a go pro.

Or lose power. You need the cyclic and collective control of blade pitch to land in the event of a power failure. The current format of full sized helicopters took a lot of heroics to get right. They'll be around for a while yet.

I have a Blade Nano CPX which has the AS 3X stabilisation system. It was my son's but he lost interest. I am interested in it because I paid for it.
It is not easy to fly and takes quite a bit of practice to get it out of ground effect without crashing.
What I do not have is a big tall empty room to fly it in. It is so light the slightest bit of breeze just takes it away.

Just a note, if you're getting into drones and aerial photography, please familiarise yourself with the current laws... Basically don't fly above 400 feet, don't fly above houses, people or roads, and don't use an FPV transmitter of more than 25 mW.

Having flown choppers since the late 80s and have done a little FPV quad flying I think choppers are like sailboarding and quads are like kites. Each has its pros and cons but I really enjoyed the 90 size gas choppers for their power but quads do give you more freedom to just fly around and explore. For adrenaline in RC aircrafts nothing beats plane pylon racing with F3D just amazing. If you have never been to a pylon race meeting I think you will be amazed at the speed and sound. YouTube does not do it justice.
those pylon racers are total weapons. some flyers visited the club i was flying at, no one had ever really seen them before first hand. once they got going nobody felt safe standing outside of the shed or without hiding behind a car. the president who allowed them to fly didn't realise what he had given permission for, and I don't think it ever happened again.
