True, but if you agree with something and you were forced to make a post then there would be lots of similar post as your post would almost be a duplicate of the post you were agreeing with.
Whereas if you disagree and are forced to post it is showing your different view and putting your opposing view on the table for others to either green thumb or red thumb and then explain why this disagree. This would then lead to further discussion/posts.
But note, i would love for it to stay the way it was, just putting forward an idea to not remove it entirely.

So who whined about getting red thumbed? Has some poor baby got upset?
I get a fair few red thumbs, so what, I give a few red thumbs, so what? So some rampant conspiracy claim must be accepted by all because there is no way to disagree with it without posting a reply.
I would suggest just posting "NO" if you disagree but can't be bothered entering into a mind numbing debate.
Leave it as it is, it's not broken.

Hi All,

For many years, opinion on the "Red Thumbs" has been divided (ironically!)

The Thumbs provided a way for those who had an opinion, but not the time nor inclination to type, a way of having some input.

Give people tools, and people being the creative wonders we are, will find new & interesting ways of using them.

Imagine our surprise to find an individual who's sole purpose was to red thumb people. From memory, over 2000 red's issued, and about 3 greens. We introduced "ratio's". Then the further we looked into it, the more "special usage" of the reds we found. Couple this up with a few complaints, and time to try a change.

The way it is now, is not in the spirit that system was originally intended.

So from today, we're going to trial a "Green Thumb Only" experience and see how it pans out...

Thoughts?

Facebook has not introduced a down thumb/vote because ...

"That's not something that we think is good for the world," Mr Zuckerberg said, expressing concern that "like" and "dislike" buttons could turn into a voting system to judge posts."

I believe he's right. A dislike button on Facebook will create WW3

I'd love to see a list of users with the number of reds and greens they've received for the year.

Who do you think would top each list?

Me too

Laurie, here's a script to help you get started ...

WITH cte (SELECT m.MemberID, m.MemberSurname, m.MemberFirstName,
COUNT(CASE WHERE tr.Mode = 'green' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) AS GreenVotes,
COUNT(CASE WHERE tr.Mode = 'red' THEN 1 ELSE 0 END) AS RedVotes
FROM tblRatings AS tr
INNER JOIN tblMembers AS m
ON m.MemberID = tr.MemberID
WHERE tr.RatingYear = YEAR(GETDATE())
GROUP BY 1,2,3)

SELECT * FROM CTE ORDER BY REDVOTES DESC
SELECT * FROM CTE ORDER BY GREENVOTES DESC

Results... decide who wins a t-shirt

All good.

When the thumbs were added, some got upset .. but nobody died.

They were added as an experiment to see if it helped the forum experience, and they did, but along the way there has always been an opposition to them (and a lot in favour), and many topics started by people wanting them removed for a better forum experience.

But we didn't remove them. It's been 9 years.

Now the time has come that we're going to trial without them, as the way people use them has changed. The world has changed.

Lets see how it pans out.

We're open to innovation & constructive ideas. Checkout slashdot.org/moderation.shtml for example.

.. and no, sorry, no naming names. People voted with the confidence that it would be confidential, and we shall honour & respect that.

However, no worries in listing the most popular members in last 2 months:

#1 = Mark _australia
#2 = cauncy
#3 = theDoctor
#4 = bjw
#5 = seanhogan
#6 = Plummet
#7 = Chris_M
#8 = Underoath
#9 = kiteboy dave
#10= Harrow

Enjoy ..

p.s. theDoctor was so close to getting a shirt .. that's gotta cut deep.

The thing with reds is,the person who gives them is either too lazy to give a reason for disagreeing or is simply too gutless to post their argument.

For the record I know of a couple of guys on here who suffer from mental health issues,I can't see the positive in red thumbs.

What this impending change is all about is advertising.

When advertisers push their product via forum discussion ,,,

and the said ad-post gets red-thumbed ,,,

the pimps hate that.

They don't pay out good money to get red-thumbed.

Is this gagging our "freedom of speech"?

Facebook, with "like" as the only option, promotes a mindless back slapping click-farm herd mentality.

The red thumbs are a very useful "product differentiation" in my seabreeze experience.

Imagine the advertising potential:

"like us , or hate us, on seabreeze. "

Maybe just adjust the ratios of greens to reds allowed, then you can only red thumb the really bad crap.

Number 1 hmmm. Embarassing? Nah maybe not, cos I guess one could not post much and still be thumbed heaps up or down (= contentious / polarized debate) so I guess that is a good thing. Saying what u think.

Anyway - to those who said people who complained about red thumbs were sooks.

Not really. I will admit I complained about it early on.
Reason: noobs don't know how to take it. Somebody would come and ask a beginner question and when some members answered with correct and good advice, some dickhead keyboard warrior troll who disliked the poster would redthumb everything they said. Beginners then get all confused about if the advise is good.
When Laurie says somebody dished out 2000 thumbs down and stuff-all thumbs up that says a lot about the mentality of some people.

I agree with Greenroom, can't we go back 10years when it was fun.....?
Unfortunately no, because a few come here just to get a hard-on over picking on certain people. Mindless idiots, but we are stuck with them. So the system has to change to try and keep it fun (and so people asking q's get good advice and that's what a hobby forum is all about.)

I'd suggest no thumbs but a poll system may help. So you can ask what is better out of say, 4 certain brands, people select one of the choices, and it graphs it at the top of the thread. Seen that work well on other fora.

Even if this were true, who cares?

I pay nothing to use this site. I don't have to watch ads if I don't want. I don't get random phone calls asking me to buy something.

...but hosting a website costs money. It aint free.

So, if what you are claiming were true. Good on em. Someone else pays for Seabreeze, and its okay with me. Unless of course you want it to be fair and true and a paid subscription...?
