That's the end of this year.

Think year 1CE-10CE. That's the first decade....etc.

Happy New Year!

Except the decade starts at the 0 year, not 1. Must be a lefty thing thinking it starts at 1.

happy new year.

No, the first year of the common era is year one. There is no year zero. Zero is nothing but a concept marking a moment in time.

If indeed the first year CE was zero, then every year after that is out by one year.

Dunno what lefties have to do with anything.

The last year BCE is followed immediately by the first year CE. Look it up.

Mathematically correct. Culturally and socially you've got no chance.

Same discussion 20 years ago. All it would meant is that you would be a year late for the party of the century because they were only holding it once.

How does holy guacamole deal with fractions? If numbers start from 1?

Ok, looked it up. It appears you are technically correct.

You can have parts of 1 but you can't have parts of zero.

There was no year zero, unless of course you were unfortunate enough to be a citizen of Democratic Kampuchea.

So for those people they would have been able to justly say the year ending a decade or century ended with a nine and the first year of the new decade ends with a zero.

It's only an interesting philosophical and cultural point.

Pop culture often gets things wrong. This is one such case.

Mathematically there is no debate, only ignorance.

Yeah, it just sounds weird. 1990 was not in the 90's?

1980 was in the 70's?

That's just crazy talk.

^^ Logic isn't crazy. You are right Formula the pop culture interpretation is understandable.

We celebrate and mark decades a year early because it sounds and looks right but, technically it's not correct.

We categorise years into decades for cultural reasons, but in reality there is no "decade" as such, only numbers and no year zero.

Not trying to change anything just making an interesting point of logic.

Crazy talk is claiming there was a year zero and that technically, year 10 was the start of the second decade.

Interesting test of logic vs pop culture.

I finally get what this stupid thread is all about. The A.D. calendar was invented using Roman numerals which had no concept of 0.

Whilst not wishing to distract from the seriousness of this issue confronting us in 2020 but . . . . who cares?

I think it's fair to suggest a carpenter may have been born 2000 years ago.
He just probably wasn't all that important

LOL. He may or may not have been the "son of God", but it's fairly certain he was important.

I always explain to look at a number line. Zero is the starting point. O.5 is half way through the first year. Year 1.5 from my world would be 0.5 years in your world.

Agreed.

When you are born, you are 0 days old.

365 days later, you are 1 year old.

With that difference that when you are born you are already 9 month old.If you still may have some doubt on conception you hardly can consider yourself " nobody" an hour or day before "birth day"
In such case Christin world may consider our era beginning about March , negative 1 year ( or negative zero )

We could see potential for quite interesting experiment AD 3000+.
Lets imagine the human is breed in artificial womb, supplying you all ingredients for all 9 months . But on the critical day you are not released but sill kept in this artificial womb. Now you could grow inside this nice, safe environment and develop brain and muscles while still swimming inside. You will start to learn and communicate without the need to be ever "born" . Possibly human could remain in this watery environment whole life if needed. Having technical means of 3rd millenia may have as much exchange with external world as nowaday , almost.

Don't forget you are already 2 weeks old before you are even conceived, since the pregnancy is dated from the last missed menstruation.

Yep, some even consider world as computer simulation ( ELon Musk) but alternatively we could all still seat in glass jars and the rest is simulation. In such case the birthday means the day you received your first iPhone to communicate with external world from glass jar.
