I really couldn't give a **** about politics but Bob's statement when we won the America's Cup in 1983 has to be one of the best political comments ever!

Show me a politician that actually digs a hole for a tree planting ceremony or one that's shed a tear for dead returning serviceman and I'm on board, there's more critical things in some peoples lives , like I said sailings for the silver spoon fed,

Way back Bill Hayden was a lay down mezare to win government for Labor when the Labor power brokers went to Bill and said "Hey Bill, how about you step aside and let Aussia Bob take the reins?? Don't worry, we got a good job lined up for you. How about Gov Gen??"

That is what happened and that is the time the Labor party completely sold out to the unions.

I never had time for Hawke then and don't have now. To Bob I say B.O.B., Better Off Buried.

If you asked 100 people on the street what they remember him by 90 % would mention him sinking a pint, that's not because he was a good for the country, I'd say it's because it's about as close a connection with 90% of the General public

Labor true believers often credit Gough Whitlam as transforming the nation but in truth, no single government did more for transforming and modernising our nation more than the Hawke - Keating powerhouse.

Utterly brilliant, utterly fallible and utterly Australian.

Obviously you are a new import, but back when 'we' won the America's cup, it was a pretty proud moment for Australia, whether they sailed or not, or even knew what sailing was. It was about winning something and against the Americans.

I don't even know if Bob Hawke himself sailed, and think he would have been at home sitting on one drinking and that's about it.

He seemed to be popular amongst the typical worker, and in reality isn't the PM more of a figure head? He should be hiring advisors for the important stuff, so charisma is probably more important.

He was a great part of Australian history.

I am greatly saddened by Bob Hawke's death. He was a political collossus who left the nation with many gifts, and was a pretty good bloke as well. He was from the days when people of real talent and self-sacrifice ran the country, something we haven't seen for a long time.

APEC, Medicare, Superannuation are just three of the major innovations of the Hawke, Keating government. I must say I was never a sculler of beer so that yard glass effort is ridiculous! He is the father of modern Australia. You are all living in it and have benefited from his reforms. Imagine life without just those 3 things above.... People talk about Howard being such a wonderful Prime Minister but he was washed along by the rivers of gold flooding their coffers from the mining boom. What did he do? What was his legacy? Gun control = good. Surplus = good. But he gave us compulsory private health care whilst subsidizing the providers to the tune of billions, money that could have been spent on public health care removing the need for private health; sold our gold reserves for a pittance and crashed the global gold market at the same time (gold went up 3 fold in the years that followed), bought elections through small tax cuts/ baby bonus etc.. and eventually intentionally (I believe) lost that last election because everyone knew the global financial crisis was looming so they could sit in opposition and rag the Labor party about how bad they were going. Bob is the father of modern Australia and the greatest Prime Minister. Ever....Now, who to vote for this year? Clive? Pauline?
RIP Bob...

I was interested to hear today that the big drinker stopped upon becoming PM and didn't have a beer until his last day as PM. 9 years off the grog as he had an important job.
If so, great respect for him as he understood the need to be a statesman.
Unlike some of the clowns we are subjected to......

Unfortunately, nowadays the far left that has invaded his "party for the workers" would be all over that and calling it racist and bigoted.
