Many years ago, I had put the call out for volunteering of time to help Laurie update Seabreeze. New emojis, new features. Basically a refresh.

It's still the same. But surely AI could help get something done?

I would have red thumbed the idea.

Do you mind sharing your business proposal (pdf, or microsoft word format), so the Seabreeze community can assess, debate amongst each other, and provide necessary feedback on your proposed 'modernization' of this important forum, that serves hundreds of thousands of users around the world to access vital and timely information?

Yes. Of course

Business plan:

Most "updates" of websites just lead to slower loading and more frequent glitches, just for the sake of more pretty graphics. Also, I don't think the age demographic that uses Seabreeze site the most really appreciate things changing all the time so that you can no longer find what you're looking for.
So, NO THANKS (IMO).

It was modernised. The red thumbs went away. What could be more woke and modern. No more modernization thanks.

Ahh, that's the business plan for failed businesses. All hype and no return on investment.

Do you think any changes would attract more users? Do you think not changing it would lose any users?

If you really think this, then why not setup some sort of group on another platform and see how that goes? I have seen groups on facebook where it just looks like random comments and no actual information.

Mind you, I 'grew up' on the internet in the days of news groups where it was all text based with no graphics at all. It worked fine for most things.

I guess now days, you get to see ads...

Maybe Laurie could learn from the ABC News and modernise.

Instead of forecasting what the wind and waves will be, Seabreeze.com.au could feed you good news stories about the wind and waves and give you a personalised experience of what the forecast should be to boost your mood and make you feel good.

Then we could have some analysis from Waleed telling us how strong the wind should have been if only we had all listened to his opinion on the waves.

Maybe stay clear of an auto spell-checker though, otherwise remery will complain of being isolated, ignored and victimised.

Let's not kid ourselves here.

The only thing attracting and retaining users is the wit and wisdom of Carantoc, expressed so concisely in near-perfect posts.

I love how angry FN gets about this!

But fair to say less people are using the website. Perhaps that's because the competition has got better and SB stayed the same.

Let Australia stay in the 1980s. You guys can keep your VCR,10$ wage and 2 beer and car options.

Perhaps it is because PM33 got banned so nobody has got nuffink to be outraged about ?

(except FN of course, he is outraged by anything, including the suggestion of having some extra emojis)

It made me happy seeing Formula Nova's posts with that big red bar above it.

I recall every one of his posts had a giant solid red bar within about 3 minutes.

It became almost de rigueur.

Personnally I never red-thumbed anyone. I am just like that. A happy-go-lucky, tolerant and inclusive 'breezer. I'd say one of the most chillaxed forum-ers here. Maybe it is the high number of snickers I consume on a daily basis ?

Angry? Why do you get that feeling? Do you interpret my posts that way?

Nah, anger is for things you really care about. If Laurie 'upgraded' this site, it would still be usable. If he didn't upgrade the site, it is still usable. Nothing to be angry about there.

I work in an environment where any idiot can say 'yeah, lets do this', but its different when the funding has to be committed and they have to justify why they are spending $500k on a project that someone just loves. It's sort of funny/ironic when you hear about someone's 'love project' that fails (or even completes), and just doesn't deliver on anything....

My guess is that Laurie runs this site as a hobby and probably just breaks even. People often forget that hosting costs money and administration costs money or time or both.

I think you need to go to another site if you are happy seeing some other guy's big red bar.

It is funny seeing over the years so many people clearly getting ready to red-thumb certain individuals, no matter what they say. I would have loved to see what the stats were and who was doing what.

From memory, Laurie or even one of the admins said that certain people were never green thumbing and always red-thumbing, which is why they decided to remove it. To your surprise, I was sort of the other way and would green thumb posts I liked and ignored the ones I didn't.

I guess not everyone thinks the same. Some even adopt a fake profile or two so that they can sledge other users while hiding behind it. It makes me wonder if those same people had accounts just to red-thumb people?? Probably.

Exactly! And its hardly a demographic that people are jumping over themselves to steal.

"how about we go after the middle-aged windsport enthusiast segment...." we could make $10k in the first year if we are lucky...

Holy be-jezsus people, come-on, get with the program.

bjw is talking about new emojis here. New emojis,...... think of the possibilities, it's like a bacteria discovering the enormity of the universe.

I'd guess one reason modernization hasn't occured is because Laurie needed the NBN to make new emojis work. I mean we needed it so we could all work from home, get medical diagnosis remotely, allow our fridges to auto-shop for us or whatever else you'se lot claimed. So now we spent the money, why not at least allow people to dream.... dream about new Seabreeze forum emojis.

How many new emojis are you planning on adding and what emotions will they express?

What research have you done to suggest this 'modernization' will expand Seabreeze's already huge userbase?

These emoji do not represent me. They do not look like me. The lack of diversity is something we should be ashamed of.

There should be a quota to ensure all emoji are used equally.

Equality

Equity

I think it can be best explained by Bloom's emoji-onomy

I think the emojis actually are terrible and due for a refresher. Can we just insert our own via the phone keyboard or does it not work?

Edit: didn't work, replaced by ??? Guess the site doesn't support utf-8 characters yet, that's a bit prehistoric.

I think it's also time to allow high res images in the paid Buy & Sell adverts. I can barely see what's advertised as the images are being resized. A bit weird when you pay for advertising. In the forum you can insert larger images and that's at no cost.

The rest of the site is a bit outdated as well but still works fine so doesn't bother me too much.
