So I'm wanting to start spinning some slugs of the rocks into the deep blue. (As budget friendly as possible)
I've got a Shimano Catana 10'6 / 4-7kg/ 15-80g lures.
And, well that's about as far as I have got. Plan was to originally run 20lb braid but I'm now wondering if I would be better of going a little heavier with say 30lb? (Heaviest rig at the moment is 6lb. haha)
Reel wise is still completely in the air. Suggestions? Something around the $100ish mark.. Fin- Nor Offshore?
Reel at that price... Penn Spinfisher V when they go on special to get some form of sealing. Not great reels but they are what they are at that price.
Price point braid... downrigger shop has 1000m spools of 30lb for $90, enough to completely fill 2 spinfishers & then some. Havnt tried this braid yet but will get some for my kids soon.
I can't see any value going 30lb braid over 20lb given the rods only rated at 7kg. It's also probably unlikely that a $100 reel will have the drag capabilities to get the most out of 30lb braid reliably.
I think any of the Daiwa's / Penns / Shimano's in that price range will be fine for what you want to do. The penns arent actually bad value for money and whilst they new penns aren't quiet the same I'd happily put my original Penn 8500SS up against the mega $$ Saltigas and Stellas.
Just bought the wife a cracking little 4-6 kg combo
Sedona with braid, great for flicking around and very capable, 20 lb black magic leader,
Love chasing big tailor with slices and poppers
Carmt go wrong for $160
I do agree 30lb overkill for a 7kg stick.
As much as im a daiwa fan for anything under $250 stick to the penn or shimano, in fact sol is cheapest daiwa i would use, below that stradic.
The drag on the penn spinfisher v actually seems pretty good- multi carbontex type with big number claims, ive had a few of them & my kids still have one each. My mate did have problem with one of his locking up, then there is the Alam Tani review where he slams them.
Something else worth considering is running mono instead of braid if budget is an issue. The extra $20 or $30 can go towards the reel. On 2 of my spinning reels i run braid (30lb and 80lb) but on my most used spinning reel i use 8 or 10kg pretest and it's fine. Sometimes for a beginner it can be much more forgiving as well.
