I heard the royal trip to Australia is costing the Australian taxpayer around $2 million. Just off the top of my head I could think of about one thousand ways our taxes could be better spent and even if one reason could not be found it would be better not to take that $2 million off the tax payer in the first place. If a member of the English royal family wants to come out here they should pay their own way. They have enough money to do so.

Why is it hard for politicians to do the right thing? Look at how one becomes a politician? You don't become one by doing fantastic work that actually helps people have a better life, work such as cleaning up after others, cooking meals, making stuff that make our life easier or fixing broken things for people.

You become a politician by big noting yourself, doing favours for certain people in return for influence, running other people down and being prepared to make morally ambiguous deals. Is it any wonder politicians are who they are?

I've had a couple of friends of very good character and ability who have joined government with good intentions. They had a good start, but in the end both gave up, saying that they just could not get anywhere and achieve anything without severely compromising their ideals and getting their hands dirty.

I would of thought it would cost a lot more than that, I think it would cost just as much for any foreign diplomat when you talk about security etc.
Like it or not we are part of the commonwealth and do have a monarchy.
Should we become a republic??

I'd imagine, the way things work and the way the tax payer pays for it, the English royals would still come out at the tax payers' expense if Australia became a republic. If anything it would probably cost us more for Australia to become a republic as we would have to pay for a president and keep paying for all the ex presidents. After a couple of decades of the Australian republic we could have five or ten ex presidents on the gravy train living the high life at our expense.

At least with the English royals we only have a few of them and they don't come out here that often.

Watching cricket over the years I have always been amazed at how the commentators can waffle on about nothing for hours on end, however my sandwich maker has been watching the live broadcast of the tour of second level royals and these royal commentators leave the cricketers for dead. Please shoot me now.

The local state MP where I lived is another example of this. She entered politics from a career in nursing. After two terms in parliament she decided to leave to go back to nursing. She said in the paper she felt she could help more people in nursing than in politics. Probably it won't hurt she now gets the very generous parliamentary pension for life, despite the fact she has about 20 years of working life ahead of her.

She has been replaced with a young fellow who apparently comes from the local area but nobody really knows him. The local mayor wanted to be selected for the Liberals but he lost out. He ran as an independent but lost, its probably fortunate he did as he is involved with the Obeids. Where I live if the Liberal candidate was Josef Stalin and the ALP had Robert Menzies as their candidate, Josef would win by a landslide.

Not interested in the royals at all but after seeing them at Bear Cottage in Manly I was impressed. Those poor kids who are terminally ill got the thrill of their lives and as for the parents, well, as a parent my heart goes out to them. If an afternoon like that gives them some joyful memories then who are we to knock it??

Dont mind seeing pics of baby George every so often but the Royal coverage is far to full on, as for politicians I think its a requirement for the job to lie. Although it cant be easy please everyone, it would be nice if they could stop taking so much from people.
