My wife and I had a close encounter with a Tiger Snake at Lake George SA. It was bloody scary. It reared its head at me and headed towards me. Fortunately it backed off and headed away I think but had no idea where it went. Driving back we saw two more snakes.

Yeh I had a run in with a tiger snake a good few years ago now.

Broke my leg badly in the process.

The antivenin is the worst hangover I have ever had and it lasted 3 days.

I didn't realise snakes could bite hard enough to break bones...

I've always felt sorry for Brown Snakes.

All the other snakes got cool names like "Taipan", "Viper" and "Death Adder", and the old brown snake just got..."Brown Snake".

Maybe they were originally called James Brown Snakes but over time dropped the James. that would be a cool name.

I don't know how to get the link up but on the West Australins website there is a great shot of a 1.7m dugite swallowing a 1m tiger snake. They breed the snakes tough down at Denmark.

Arnt they called King Brown's? Pretty bad ass to me.Think the local name is malaga (could be the dugite?)..fun fact, the King Brown snake is actually catabolistic and the anti venom used on the east coast is not effective for a bite from a sandgroper Brown

You were close with the local name, it's mulga, aka King brown. They are actually in the black snake family but are not black to look at. It has something like the third highest volume of venom in snakes worldwide.

The dugite is a different snake, usually known as a dugite down south and gwardar up north. They are in the brown snake family but can be all sorts of colours. The gwardar is the more toxic of the two, but the mulga delivers heaps more venom.

Here's about three feet of a four foot mulga, a decent size but they get to about six, maybe seven?, can't remember. I only read about all this recently thanks to having this one hanging around for a few weeks.
