Any recommendations for a week accommodation at Yorkeys, walk to beach, nothing flash needed ? Mid June
I recommend you head to Port Douglas, more reliable wind.
At Yorkeys I've stayed at Golden Sands Beachfront Apartment twice previously which has beach access.
If you go to Port, stay at Dreamcatcher Apartments, short walk to a great kiting location.
Call the bloke at Villa Marine on Rutherford St, great rates, great accommodation, 30 seconds from the beach.
If you're going there to kite a walk along the beach might be all you'll do , if you want wind head north

How bad can it be?
I'm staying at Trinity beach early July and was hoping to kite Yorkeys at least a couple of times.
What's the go up there?

Wind , the further north you go the more you get. You can be lucky at Yorkies/ Trinity but be prepared expect alot of beer drinking weather and dry gear
There are plenty of places in the cairns area to stay , and yorkeys is no exception you can find what you need online , we are just coming in to our good kite weather now as it's cooling down , the stingers are pissing of and the good south easterly 's are here . Good luck with it !
Before I started kiting I went and stayed at Koala beach towards the end of June, it's the first beach on the right as you cross the daintree river.
It was $10 a night to camp in the rainforest just behind the beach, or they have cabins there also. Excellent amenities (hot showers, shared kitchen/BBQ facilities, a pool, a bar that also serves decent food) and right on a big wide beach. It was blowing I'm guessing 20 - 22 knots on shore almost all day long.
Anyone kited there?
The Daintree estuary mouth looks so awesome with the sandbar except for the huge logs with teeth. Anywhere to rent a 4wd so you can drive north and camp next to spot up cooktown way? do you actually need a 4wd to get to first decent spot past port doug/daintree?
Yeah we were a bit worried about those, but according to the guys that ran the place it was fine up the top end of the beach away from the mouth. The road turns to gravel after Cape tribulation, but you can drive up as far as the Bloomfield river without a 4WD (I did it in a wicked camper - when it was dry, different story after rain I would imagine).
I just had a look and koala beach campground closed down! That sucks. There's also this place I've camped at, $15 a night and right on the beach just 10k further north: www.capetribcamping.com.au/accommodation/unpowered-site (cant remember if it was windy or sheltered there)
As for Cooktown, there's nothing there. When you do find a "beach", you'll likely be the only person on there, let alone the only kiter. Enter the water at your peril.
The winds good here at the moment, sun is out and its onshore. Yorkeys/Cairns is a lot cheaper than port for accomodation. Trinity Beach has some good affordable places to stay as does Cairns. Yorkeys Beach is a great spot while the suburb itself is high in rentals and light on accomodation, at the moment!
