God the media over-hypes incidents like these. From the sounds of it they didn't even get their hair wet!! Just another case of scaring the general community who are uneducated about these animals and believe everything the media portrays to them.

I guess the media were over-hyping the poor dude that lost both arms to a shark is Esperance as well?

I am not aware of any vending machines, or bees, causing injuries of this nature.

Jokes aside guys this would have been farking scary and if it was you I don't think you'd be cracking jokes...

Fact is there's more whites around now than ever before and with less fish in the ocean and conditioning by cage diving operators chumming up in SA to bring in the regulars, it's unsurprising that these encounters are becoming more common up and down the coast of SW WA.

I don't know what the answer is but anyone who thinks there aren't more sharks around is blind.

Wasn't cracking a joke, just putting into perspective the amount of overhyped stories there are about shark-human encounters on the news/other media sources. Its unfortunate to say the least about the bloke in Esperance and I feel real bad for him but for god sake, the chances of it happening are soooo low. It just get plastered everywhere when it does happen and that what makes it seem so bad. If the media reported about all fatal car crashes on the road I bet nobody would be driving..And in response to your comment about there being more sharks around now Antisense, there probably is the same amount (I don't know the official stats) but we just see them more because more people use beaches, there are more surveillance choppers and other tracking devices used etc. Im no expert but when you see the videos and stats of all those sharks being finned and chucked back in the water to rot, its hard to believe there is more around than ever when millions of them are killed every year...

Is it possible that Sharks will replace Euros on the SB kite forum this summer?

Now before everyone starts bashing me for loving sharks and saying I don't care about human lives or this doesn't account for injuries etc...
It is definitely horrid when a shark attack occurs. If the shark doesn't kill you it can injury you severely along with mental issues.
The thing is though, us humans, are playing in their backyard. To them we just look like a seal. So if a hungry shark see's a seal it'll take a bite. Which is why often they let go, because instead of nice soft seal blubber, they get angry bony person.
Killing sharks is not the answer. If we keep it up they'll be gone for good and it'll be another part of this planet that humans have destroyed.
Now I'm no greeny but we should be trying to find a solution other then shooting every shark we see.
It's not the sharks fault.

Just going to leave this here. What a absolute waste! Such a shame this happened to a GW. Who knows how many other ones get caught.. But yeah, with things like this going on in the world their numbers are sure to be increasing, not. -.-

Am I the only one who actually thinks that GW Sharks are not beautiful creatures but big ugly ****in beasts. Rays, Parrot fish, Tuna now they all look handsome fish and generally do not bite lumps out of you.

Try googling what would happen if they were eliminated from the food chain.

Easiest way to be 'safer' is not to go in the water! Less Kiters in the way of my tack Problem solved. Cant believe the ignorance and easy going attitude about killing a whole species of shark just so you feel that little safer in the water only then to be stung by a box jellyfish or step on a stone fish etc possibly. You can go on for days about what animals are dangerous and which ones you need to stay away from but bloody hell, you don't need to kill them to be safe. Plenty of mitigation measures that can be used to combat the issue of 'safety' but its this monstrous creature lurking in the deep stereotype that the media portrays that scares the F**k out of people. Bet we have all kited over one and didn't even know about it

Completely agree! We never tire of this conversation do we?

"Media coverage can help fuel a person's example bias with widespread and extensive coverage of unusual events, such as homicide or airline accidents, and less coverage of more routine, less sensational events, such as common diseases or car accidents. For example, when asked to rate the probability of a variety of causes of death, people tend to rate "newsworthy" events as more likely because they can more readily recall an example from memory. Moreover, unusual and vivid events like homicides, shark attacks, or lightning are more often reported in mass media than common and unsensational causes of death like common diseases.

For example, many people think that the likelihood of dying from shark attacks is greater than that of dying from being hit by falling airplane parts, when more people actually die from falling airplane parts. When a shark attack occurs, the deaths are widely reported in the media whereas deaths as a result of being hit by falling airplane parts are rarely reported in the media."

Although, going in the water might just change the odds of shark attacking YOU.... The odds are still extremely low.

Buy a lotto ticket.

I took your advice. wildaid.org/shark-savers/
Very interesting and seems to make sense to me. I'm scared ****less of sharks but I don't hate them as such. It's just the them eating me bit I'm not keen on.

Can't we just come up with something that will prevent me from being digested by a large carnivorous fish? Video cameras used to be as big as an esky now they are as big as a matchbox. Surely we can do the same with shark repellent technology.
