So I got a freak gust getting out of the water yesterday.
So, yeah, I no longer have any skin on my knee. Anyone able to recommend anything to help it heal?
Go to the chemist and ask for surgical bandages.
You can get quite large waterproof ones which are great.
They're not cheep as they work out about $5 each hut definitely worth it.
This stuff called - Sweedish Bitters. You can buy it from the chemist, it is a little expensive and you buy it in fairly large bottles but it is definitely worth it. It will last a loonnnggg time. Its a liquid. you can use it for anything; bites, burns, sores, grazes, you can even drink it if you have a sore throat. ANYTHING.
oh and it stings like nothing you have ever felt before but within days it will be healed. i gaurantee you. maybe. lol.
greatest thing since sliced bread. and the kite. and the board. you know what i mean. it is great.
I used to get heaps of annoying bloody knee grazes from rugby and the hard grounds this winter particularly.
The best thing is NOT to cover it unless ofcourse its bleeding like crazy, I presume it has stopped.
My reason is, because in my experience covered cuts become all soggy and take forever to heal.
Just slap some betadine on it and leave it to dry, should be good
Hmmm I wonder if my boss would be okay with me wearing shorts to work for the next week.... That would actually be kinda funny...
(I work in a bank)
bactroban and waterproof bandaging.. the surgical stuff recomended above.. i had this nasty deep cut on my side and wasnt healing until i started using those in combination. it speeds up healin process heaps
Ah yes, well in that case, best thing is to wear a not-to-fluffy cover for it during the day, but to take it off when you get home/go to bed.
It needs air otherwise it just goes baaaaaad .
Bactroban is brilliant but is restricted prescription (for golden staff. and other bad bug treatment)
The very best stuff for areas with no skin (especially grazes) is called FIXAMOL. Called other names but it looks like white matterial, with paper backing. Originally invented for and still used for burns and skin graft donor sites.
Best thing is that you stick it on (peel off the paper backing) and leave it for 3-5 days, it reduces the pain immediately and heals quickly.
You just pat it dry with a towel (hospitals use hairdryers) after showers.
In our house the shower definition gets stretched to swimming...kiting...
But you will need to replace if it falls off which isnt the original idea but unless you do have a burn, it doesnt matter.
Never rip it off - soak off with oil (olive) if its stuck or just trim the edges if its tatty.
HI Kalavas,
Can't go wrong with good old Betadine. It promotes fast healing and kills nasties. Looks gnarly too!
Just have to stay out of the water for a while 'til healed. Bummer. We sell Pro-tec street knee pads, kiteboardingschool.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=68&category_id=20&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=84 could help in the future.
See you down the beach.
Good winds,
If it's not too much of a gaping wound, Peroxide work's a treat!
Get's a good bubble and sting going on but seals up the wound and any infection no prob's, any decent chemist should sell it.
hey surfoil, is the metho 4 splashin' on the wound or drinkin' for the pain???
'cos if it's 4 drinkin it go's better with beetroot juice...
splash a bit ok - don't waste too much
but this stuff i prefer straight up
helps ease the sting hiic
how'd you know?
Well, I'm using using betadine to keep it aseptic, a little of this white padding type stuff, and some fixomul to keep it in place. Thats only when I'm wearing pants or out in the sun (few minutes yesterday arvo and it felt like it was burning fast, it would make sense since the skin is so pale)
Sooner I can stay upwind, the better, I was just getting out to do the Walk of Shame.
Gees youve good a real fruitsalad of dressings happening.
Fixamol is used like surfoil66's metho - straight up. Pure 100% fixamol, no betadine, cotton or beetroot juice!!
Take all that muck off, and put a big piece of fixamol DIRECTLY onto your knee (sl bent) press it down properly and leave it alone for 4 days.
It stretches a bit so you can walk properly, it lets the skin breath and you wash it to keep it clean so it wont go baaaad. or sunburnt.
Then by day 3 you'll think your invinciable n go kiting anyway.
Sorry to dredge up an old topic.
I was down south this weekend in Busselton and my company happened to include two doctors and a nurse (to combat the shortage of country doctors, people who undertake GP training need to spend 6 months in a country town, my friend from Dalkeith was still in shock!). Naturally as befits new doctors, thye couldn't resist offfering their medical opinion. Apparently the "correct" thing to do was what I first did; whack a square of Fixamul on it for a week or two (I pulled it off after one day when there was a bit of puss underneeth, apparently this is okay). Betadine apparently killed off the new skin cells that were trying to grow over the wound. They recommended that if I wanted to wash it in anything, use saline (I think they meant I should keep kiting... :) ).
(They said that if treated with betadine it will still heal, but it may take a little longer)
