I have just started kiting about 3 months ago and now that i have started my dad also wants to get into it... the only problem is that he has had 3 hip replacements! He is very fit though. I am not sure whether it would be great for his hips but he thinks that it will be fine... i am just after some feedback whether any1 else who has had a hip replacement kites. Or if any1 can just tell me if its possible or not.
thanks!
I broke both my hips at the growth plates, now riding with 2 titanium rods in each hip, have had no problem so far,
I'm 85 I've had a triple bypass , full frontal lobotomy , penis enlargement and I have one wooden leg .. Still do a lot of unhooked stuff ..
Hey Felixk,
I would see no reason why your dad couldn't enjoy the sport too, so long as he's mainly just into free riding. I would think freestyle and kiteloops etc may give him a bit of curry, gut just cruising and average jumps should be sweet.
I'm no doctor, but I know there are several doctors and orthopaedic specialists read this forum, perhaps they could give you a bit more advice.
Knees are far more susceptable to injury IMHO, and there are heaps of riders riding around with dodgy knees.
Good winds,
it's not the sort of thing i would recommend for a bloke with replacement hips. the new hips are only allowed to go to 90 degrees of flexion before they become unstable and can dislocate spontaneously. this is the reason his hip surgeon probably told him not to sit in really deep armchairs and that sort of thing. it does happen, and is usually a surgical fix i believe.
kiting would probably be okay so long as he never flexed his hips past 90 degrees. this could be a tough ask......
i know a 60 year old in UK who kites and has had hip replacement....
doesnt do tricks - but still rides and has fun.
Give him a giant wedgie, whack him in the ribs a few times with a 4x2 then make him put his head upside down whilst you pour salt water up his nose and down his throat... if he doesn't like that he's never gonna make it past his 1st lesson. Cheaper than paying for a real lesson this way...
Best of luck for the old bloke.
