Some time back a random bloke asked if he could use my tether to launch his kite from. Anyway to cut a long story short, after using it and then chatting to him sometime later, he said that he didn't like the knot that I had used to attach the clip to the rope and that he had re-done it with a rigging/climbing style knot that is better. He was definitely right, as once this thing locks in it is not going anywhere.
Anyway, I have since tried to work out how to do this knot and have replicated it a couple of times but with much effort. I am interested to know if anyone knows the name of this knot so that I can look up clear instructions on how to do it.
I am hoping the pictures (front side and reverse side) I have attached are clear enough to give it away and have slightly separated the knot in the first picture.
Cheers!
Can it slide? if so, looks like a variation of this one - www.animatedknots.com/poachers-knot
Where instead of wrapping round the loop twice, it only goes 1 1/2 times then slides down the middle before tightening.
Inavluabe resource: www.animatedknots.com/ scan the pictures, you'll find it.
Real men splice properly. Those tails/buries are way too short, you should know better
Yeah!!!! You guys are good!
That is definitely the knot. Just tied it and it came up exactly the same. Thanks for the heads up. You are right about that website...brilliant.
Thanks again.
Real men splice their ropes.
Real men don't launch with a tether...
A round turn and 2 half hitches will be more than ample
Plumm dog you need to change that hook
I've seen blokes chasing kites with those
On a teather, get one of these

I bust out the teather in over 30 knot solo launches. Used it the other day gusting to 40 knots. I'm pretty pleased to be unmanly teathering in those winds.

Nope. I don't want to be fiddling around with the clip in 40 knots. If the kite farks off, it farks off. It never has however.
Here's a rig for Saturday
6.5 mtr swell and spikes of 40 knts
Predicted for Dongara geraldton region
Now that's a good splice.
That double fishermans knot is a sliding knot used a lot in climbing for tying two ropes together . It looks fancy but can be hard to undo if it has had some real tension although that is probably not a problem here.
A bowline is much easier to undo and a better choice IMO
A clove hitch is also a possibility as it is easy and can be adjusted easily and if worried about it not being 100% secure you could finish it off with a half hitch at the end .
fancy looking knot.
as said above, clove hitch is far better, wont come undone and easy to undo. i trust my life with a single clove hitch almost every day, same with a double bowline and double figure 8.
If you work at heights for a living, you should know not to ever trust your life to a single knot.
The barrel/scaffold knot is the only one that fixes the carabiner in place though its probably a nice to have in this case. Figure 8 on a bight is easier and takes 1 sec.

Snapped one of those when I crashed my 10m--I'd unhooked myself and that clip on the leash just sheared right off. I'll fish out a picture . . . I'd put my faith in Plummet's dodgily spliced rope before that 50 cent clip.

Umm, that looks like one i got from the boat store, forged 316 stainless, definitely not 50c. Very solid.

Unsure of your similar looking cleat,
But the one I pictured ain't 50c from memory it's around $30, widely used by the cray fishermen here on their pots
Mine is currently holding a transportable house level on a 3500kg strap at full tension, so I'd say it's unlikely the same one in quality
It's not plums splice it's the hook, a bouncing kite on a teather creates slack and this is where he might go for a jog, I've seen 2 occasion of this both flying across the zenith slapping the deck then becoming unhooked, I watch a mate here run back and forth 3/4 times trying to grab his kite, just as he got close off it went again, I nearly wet myself laughing
The steel bent around to join to the shank is definitely not forged, doesn't even look like its welded together. Not exactly a quality piece of gear.

Yeah, not forged eh. I was just amazed that of all the points in the safety leash chain, the thing that broke it was getting the hook ripped in half :o that particular leash has been cut down and recycled--with a fresh hook--as a super-short leash for the Dynabar.
Given how crap people are at helping launch and land kites, I'm not surprised they can't set a tether up. I blame a lack of attention to detail and a side helping off half-assery.
I feel like a simple bowline would be best knot here, theres something I don't trust about the OP knot :/
Its been a few years. But I have never seen one on the boats I have worked on out of Big Bank, Abrolhos, Freshwater, Kalbarrie, Gero.
I have used double gear, single gear, old(round) and new skool pots.
Where would they use the clip on their pots anyway?
I recon they would bend, with a 15 tonne boat pulling a pot caught under a ledge with railway sleepers inside.
Or would they be used to attach additional floats? That I could understand, but they may cause slippage around the winch.
I agree with Captsdh, a bowline is fine and is easy to undo.
