Hi just wondering if anyone has hip o/a and lab tears and still kites or if any recommendations on treatment etc to be able to still kite etc cheers.
Yeah, mine got to a point that random strangers were frequently expressing concern that I'd injured myself, as I was hobbling up the beach after a session! Kiting was never painful as long as I was careful to avoid impacts (choppy water, bad landings); it just hurt to walk. The problem joint has since been replaced, and a strapless foil board enables plenty of low-impact exercise while also having fun. Has to be a good thing, right?

Got O/A in right hip, holding out as long as I can before going under the knife.
I've just been strength training the major muscle groups around it and had a fair bit of success with this approach.Also ice-packs after every session help immensely , bang it straight on the hip.
I know of guys on here that have had replacements and can still rip it in the waves, not quite sure how they go on the choppy stuff on a twinny.
Not prepared to give up my twinny yet !!

This is good strategy until such time when no amount of strength training can help and things go downhill, so if that happens don't delay to get a replacement. I was never advised that having synovial fluid forced into the damaged bone can actually kill the entire head of the femur and give a high risk of fracture, so I also held out on surgery. All aspects of general health suffer, so would've been better to have the surgery earlier and move on.
I hope that this won't happen to you, and you get to continue having twin-tip fun for many years!
I still occasionally ride Twin-tip with a prosthetic hip but I'm careful never to land heavily on my feet, mainly because of not wanting to harm other dodgy joints.
I originally thought I had a groin strain comming down wind toeside on foil
but turned out osteoarthritis and lab tears both hips.can't foil

It is my belief that maintaining muscle strength around the joint is our only hope of maintaining joint function, and it also speeds the recovery if you do go to surgery eventually. So, my strategy is to continue with whatever exercises don't hurt too much, and use NSAID's as needed to prevent damaging (& painful) inflammation. (Usually topically-applied Voltaren emulgel to avoid gastric issues; does seem to help.)
Haven't tried the ice-packs as Flyer100 recommends. probably has some merit?
A Physio did recommend heat packs before exercising to improve flexibility, and that can be quite soothing also. Don't know if it helps long-term though?
