Hi all.

We are working on an idea that could help to prevent a number of kitesurfing injuries, however we first need to do a little market research.

The people we want to hear from are those that have sustained kitesurfing injuries to legs, ankles, knees and hips.

If we could have some idea of the type of injury sustained and a short description on the incident that led to the injury it would help a lot in understanding how we can tailor this idea to maximize protection.

This is not a wind up and could lead to preventing kitesurfing injury. If anybody does not want to post on a public forum then please PM me.

Cheers

Chris

2 years ago developed acute tennis elbow in my right arm I continued to kite on and off putting up with it then it progressed to reduce mobility in the joint and I can no longer straighten my right arm I would say it is about 5% movement loss, it comes and goes each season.
Now it has progressed to the other arm but is no where as severe as it was in my right arm.
I have had physio for it a number of times scans etc even considered the op you can get but didn't as it is kinda subsided in my right arm at the moment.
I also was, and do weights on a regular basis for strength training and thought that being quite strong in upper body that I wouldn't develop tennis elbow but I was wrong as you can see.

I did a back roll transistion in shallow water, got lofted landed on my left heel sustaining a hairline fracture of the heel bone and took a chip off my talus.

Was in plaster for about 6 weeks then in a plaster shoe for 8.
X-rays and Mri's sowed that surgery would not benefit and the best i could do was rest which i did as much as possible.

8 months on and still get tinges of sharp pain, at times so sharp that i have to sit down. Dr reckons a year before full recovery.
However am back kiting an my usual activities without too much drama.

left knee MCL - back foot came out of footstrap on landing. Was my first board and it had narrow windsurfing type straps on it. Gym work, normal footstraps and bit more experience (was 2months into kiting) would have prevented it.

Stretched foot tendons + 1st MC fracture - same as above except this time my ankle gave out before knee. maybe all of the above does not help....(2.5yrs kiting this time, proper straps)

Dislocated shoulder - handlepass gone wrong. no idea what happened shoulder poped out and in few seconds later. was underpowered, bar must have just pulled from a funny direction.

fractured tiba - misjudged a wave and slammed into it with lip hitting my knee. next time pay attention.

Sh***t ogt smacked lots of times 9 years ago and long medical records including stitches, plaster and orperations from riding the early SS high aspect gear on the market.
Took some good measures sincw including changing to better kites, teaspoons of concrete in my black coffee now and HTFU beyond belief. Now all good just loads of scars and breaks to remember and experience to relay to others.
Its a tougth sport boys and girls but with todays education, technology and lame arse depower kites you should look, listen watch and learn. Use your senses and stay safe safe on the water and stay the hell off the land.

Hope this gets across as real

Regards

Glen

Fractured ankle - lateral malleolus. Came in fully loaded on my old 8m C kite. Was about to land it, so dropped my board on the beach - upwind of me. Wind caught the board and blew it sideways into my ankle. A few weeks of plaster, but the reaminder of the seabreeze season in WA off the water

Never heard of any accident like that anywhere else, and in 10 years of emergency department work, have never come across anyone breaking their ankle by direct trauma like that. But I ALWAYS drop my board downwind of me now

Didn't WAKSA/AKSA do a survey of injuries a year (or two) ago? Maybe contact them?

BTW I 'tweaked' my back being a more than a tad overpowered on the long downwinder on Sunday. I never really get back pains but this has gotten way worse all week and I have had to bail on kiting yesterday and today. Good grief Charlie Brown!!

I finally bit the bullet and got some physio manipulations this morning. Roll on Sundee - I will be out kiting even if I have to strap a zimmer-frame to my board!!

I've hurt my pride a few times...

I think the worst injury i've really had though is coming in to the beach when i was learning on a low-depower C kite and hadn't really got the hang of stopping when youre going way too fast. It seems that the friction of sand on skin will always stop you. By the end of that week i had SO much skin missing.

Dislocated my knee cap, plenty of mates who have hyperextended the knee joint.

I've come down hard on my heel in shallow water with my leg locked straight minus my board. I hyperextended my knee and corked my thigh somehow

Hundreds of $ of osteo and I'm still suffering 3 months later *sigh*.

Have your low back checked out. Had L4 5 discectomy on tuesday off the water for 3 months at least. Probably worst part of kiting for back is pumping the kite up. I have decided to get Bravo electric pump for sure. Interestingly new kites for this season required intensive pumping 12psi for struts and 10psi LE.
I ignored back pain for quite a while till I landed up with leg pain, numbness and some weakness. Feel much better post op but it's early days.

Seat harness is a lot better for an injured / sensitive back (like mine), but it reduces your hip mobility. You can compensate this for a certain extent with a sliding spreader bar / hook. It will still limit your style, but it's still better then sitting at home with sciatic pain.

last friday i did a back roll in shallow water and it didnt go as planned so i kicked my board off and landed hard on my left foot

xrays werent very good and only showed that my navicular bone was broken

specialist said get a cat scan which revealed the navicular bone has 5 cracks in it with 6 fragments around the area

still waiting to see the specialist with results from the cat scan but looks like ill need surgery to remove the fragments so they wont cause pain in the future

either way trying to walk around on crutches after a few xmas drinks is quite challenging as is showering and taking a piss

Last week my board came off at the tip of a wave. Somehow it ended up hitting me square in the shin bone.

Blood everywhere and a big hole in my leg where there wasn't one before.

I'd wear shin pads in the future but I'd get bashed by the bullies before I make it to the water.

Backloop kiteloop - front foot came out of the strap and injured my knee and ankle. Any more power and it would have been straight to hospital. Fortunately was still able to walk (limp) back up the beach.

Believe this is quite a common one - i.e. landing with one foot coming out of the strap and then twisting / hyper-extending the knee and/or ankle.
