I need educating !! I just dont get the foiling thing !!
They seem to be insanely efficient which my brain cant just work out given the forces that are loaded onto such a small 'planing' area ??
And the video shows peeps cruising flat water (ok saw one back roll) but whats the difference to a dedicated light wind board ? (yes they are silent I hear - LOL)
Ive thought about playing with a foil - I have an old board that would be a good mule but I just cant get excited !! What am I missing??

for me . it's all about the options they open up . Also they are fantastic on knees and ankles compared to a raceboard/slalom board . No constant slapping, highly efficient .

They turn a day where you might not be able to get out into a session . Yes people are going to like their own thing but it is pretty amazing to be doing more than double the wind strength . The distance you can cover in a session is insane . I dunnow it's not for everyone but i love it and i miss it badly , still in rehab for this shoulder op and prob wont be back on the water until xmas and i've been off the water since may :(

I'm just starting and the efficiency is bloody stunning. Yesterday the only other kiter out on an 18m gave up, he was doing the walk of shame. I rigged up the 8m! and was blasting upwind!... madness.

PS Its a wing that provides lift, not a displacement planning area like a board.

All you really need to know is that almost every single person that has spent the time to learn to foil is totally addicted and doesn't really want to ride anything else. We are talking about national level freestyle competitors, old school boosters, surf and directional riders. You name it. They all want to foil rather than ride their old boards.

The only caveat is that the odd times I have not been able to foil I find it to be loads more fun to flip around on a TT, or mess about on a surfboard, than it used to be. The old stuff seems a little more fresh. It's also kind of nice to know I can still do all that stuff. In pure terms it's foil 1 and surf 2, especially if it's good proper surf.

The other thing to know is that foiling is not kiteboarding with a different board. It is foiling. Apart from using the kite as the power source it is an entirely different sport. At no time could you shut your eyes and think you're just out riding on a kite board.

5 foiling setups just got sold here in Bermuda for less than $750 USD all used but i can tell you the guys are frothing, and all the guys that sold bought new foils, anyone who whines about prices are kidding themselves, dont knock something cause you dont want to spend money on it, nothing is free so toughen up and spend some freight for the fun.The cost of setup against time able to be on water foil will trump every time.

Awesome Video by the way, glamour spot

How much is an 18m and a big door?

I recon a hydrofoil is around the same or cheaper. Plus you can kick the door or big sb's arse with half the size kite in light wind.

That said i made my own cause i was too cheap/poor to buy one!....

There's generally 3 groups of dudes in making comments about hydrofoils.

A) Dudes interested in them want more info
B) Dude bagging them before they have tried them.
C) Hydrofoiling dudes that are stoked as fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

I like to think i ride pretty fast on my twintip and some guy went past me the other day on a foil at 4 times my speed. Hopefully he didnt crash or he's probably dead!
